200gr Berry's with N120

Post by Rivertrail »

Anyone used this combination? Just haven't read much really with anyone using a 200 grain bullet. Not asking for pet loads or whatever just curious if I have picked an odd ball powder bullet combination. It seems lots of people love 1680 but they all talk about it being loud and dirty.

Anyway, just curious as this is my first go at loading this cartridge.

I’ve never used any of the Berry’s bullets, but have used N120 with bullet weights from 175-265 grains subsonic and 150-175 grains for supers with great results. It’s my go to powder for carbine length gas systems.

Sara is out there but you have to look and most sub data will for bullets over 200 grains. Sierra, Hornady, and of course Vihtavouri all have data on line. In a pinch you can use 1680 data, but will need about a grain more N120 to get the same velocity.

Thank you for that information. I will be loading subsonic rounds so I guess we will give it a shot and see what happens.

I'm Using it and was hoping to find some info on COL for this, I used 2.245 COL (from VV 200gr lapua) and 10.3 gr of 120. I see Berrys recommends 2.150 COL, so I'm quite longer on my load. Have not chrono or tested for accuracy just for function and sound(sub or not). did the later well.

I loaded at 2.240

10.3 grains 910 fps average of 5 shots. No lock back
10.5 grains 938fps average out of 5 shots no lock back.
10.7 grains 979 fps average out of 5 shots locked back on last round

Out of 9” barrel no suppressor.

Barrel has approx 100 rounds through it

Had a couple of feeding issues that I’m attempting to diagnose. I’m thinking I may have bumped the shoulder a little when seating a couple of the bullets. Still working on that. All shot well though.

I’m going to test again with 10.8 and 11 to see what happens. Shots groups seemed to shrink at the charge was increased.

I know some of the berry’s Bullets are seated short because they are a .309” diameter and will stick in the throat of the chamber. You might try their recommended length.

That may have been the issue - it sounds correct. I will shorten the next loads and give it a shot! Thank you
