Vectan powder

Post by lordkain1 »

Hi,

I am planning to reload 110gr vmax and some 200grs lapua with vectan powder because where I’m living there’s nothing else ..
So is there people with some load data with vectan sp3 or other powder from them ??

Because there is no published load data for that powder and 300blk, it may be difficult. In a little bit of research I did there is conflicting information on where Vectan SP3 falls in the burn rate chart. One chart I looked at puts it at the same level as Alliant 2400, Acurate 4100, Enforcer, Hodgdon Longshot, and a few others. Another chart put it in a range between Vihtavuori N130, and Winchester 680. Frankly this gives you a broad range to try to work with. I cannot give you load data, but I can tell you that if I was going to try it, I would Most likely start using STARTING load data with something I was very familiar with, in my case would be Accurate 1680.

Of course obeying all safety rules. For the high velocity loads I would start low and work up. My start point would be at the bottom of the 1680 load data for the bullet weight. For heavy subs I would start high and work down for the bullet weight being used until I obtain subsonic velocities.

Thank you for your reply. Like I said if I had choice I would start with well documented load data like with h110 or a1680, n110… but I’m living on a French island in the middle of Atlantic so I do with what I have access to .

From all the information I was able to gather there’s two powder from vectan that sees to dit 300 blk reloading .

First the sp3 which is two base powder seems to work for both sup and sub . The load seems to be around 16grs for sup and 10 grs for sub.

The other powder is ba 6 1/2 but I don’t much information about it ..

My gun will be a ddm4 pdw and I bought some empty case from starline.

Not familiar with Vectan powders, so cannot give you any first-hand experience. But the latest version of QuickLoad does not have SP3 in its database. Nor does the Vectan Load PDF from Grafs (https://www.grafs.com/uploads/technical ... ile/20.pdf). Any chance they renamed it?

QuickLoad shows BA 6 1/2 at 100% charge density at 18.61 grains, producing 1719 fps and 36264 psi, using the Hornady 110gr V-Max. That's nearly 20,000 psi under SAAMI max, of course. I don't think BA 6 1/2 would be a very good powder in that application.

Looking at your Lapua 200gr subsonic, that BA 6 1/2 powder will produce around 1050 fps at 10.2 gr, with 36264 psi. Again, I don't think that's a very good powder in that application (and particularly with such light loads, great caution must be exercised with regard to secondary detonation effects... I don't know enough about Vectan powders to suggest whether that's a concern or not).

Hopefully you can find a more suitable powder for your two 300 BLK loads.

EDIT: I originally modeled a conventional-length rifle barrel. When changed to the 7" in the DDM4 PDW, the subsonic load looks much more reasonable. Disregard my comment about secondary detonation effects.

I, too, shoot the DDM4 PDW. It's a great little gun!

I have hard copies of the archived link, there is no data for SP3 subsonic heavier than 150 grain. BA9, Tubal 2000, BA 6 1/2 would be the most likely choices. I will get the other information posted when I can.
