Testing a new cast bullet loading 6 at a time to get to the velocity, and Idiot me missed that my hopper was out of powder.
Now I have 265 gr of powder coated lead stuck 4 inches from the chamber in my model 7. I have never not been able to knock out a stuck bullet. this thing is stuck. soaked overnight with PB plaster and nothing. next move is a really long 1/8 inch drill bit and a lot of patience.
Stupid rookie mistake.

Yes, I am a Baptist, and yes I carry a gun. You might think I carry a gun because I don't trust God. Well you would be wrong. I have complete faith in my Lord. It is mankind I have no trust in

Every cast shooter should consider one.
Threads into a dedicated cleaning rod. Every true muzzle loader shooter has a few of these.
Use a cleaning rod 12" or longer than your barrel and a brass or derlin bore guide on the rod to protect the muzzle, thread the rod into the stuck bullet. I use a brass weight about 4" long 1" diameter as a slide hammer between the bore guide and cleaning rod handle and generally have no problems pulling any thing stuck.

300 Blackout, not just for sub-sonics.

Yep. It's tough to drive out a bullet when only one end of the barrel is open.dellet wrote:Every true muzzle loader shooter has a few of these.
It's probably a bad idea from some reason I haven't thought of, but it seems to me that in a bolt action one could load a lightly charged case (no bullet) and shoot it out.
Edit: Hatcher's Notebook talks about barrel obstructions starting on page 180. Interesting read, and he was mostly successful shooting out a stuck bullet. It should be noted that he didn't have to pay for the barrels he destroyed.
Re: Some days I simply cannot believe what I have done
I'm not familiar with the model 7, but can you put the barrel in the oven, warm it up, couple drops of a cooler liquid on the boolit to cool it down, then knock it out?

If it is a hard cast bullet it will be harder to drive out than you would think. I use a 1/4" drill rod with a piece of thin plastic tubing over it to protect the rifling. It will take a large hammer and some serious pounding to move the bullet. Been there.
Re: Some days I simply cannot believe what I have done
After pounding stuck boolits from a Lee sizer, I'd be tempted to melt it out. With a revolve, forcing cone restricts using an anvil so you can get a real good whack.
Re: Some days I simply cannot believe what I have done
I have pondered what I would do in the same situation...so far I have not had to try: the dip. But based on how it eats the lead in my cans, it might work.

....maybe a butane torch with a small tip can be used to melt the lead from the chamber end? I'd think the temperature to melt the stuck cast lead would be way below the range that barrel damage would occur, especially if it was done in short bursts???

Next time try to push it out with hydraulic force. Pounding on it with a rod makes the bullet swell up against the bore and stick worse, threading a screw in as shown above can do the same thing.
Stand the barrel vertically, so the stuck bullet is closer to the bottom end. Mostly fill the bore with oil of some sort, doesn't matter much what it is. Insert a tight fitting aluminum rod in the top and smack it with a mallet.
Also, when removing stuck bullets - do NOT start with light taps; you'll stick it in the bore worse. Start off from the get-go with a large hammer and at least moderate force to get the bullet moving; the mass of a heavy hammer or sledge will keep it moving once it starts to budge.
