new ingot moulds

Post by Kokodog »

my four new ingot moulds

2” x 1” channel & 1 1/4”x 1 1/4” x 1/8” angle

7 cavities each, 8 1/2” long cavity w/ a 15 degree slope cut on each end
and about 1/2” air gap between each cavity to enhance cooling

these will last several lifetimes

I decided to stop goofing around w/ all sorts of substitutes for real ingot moulds

pour a single ladle of alloyed molten lead for the bottom pour furnace or ……..
fill the cavity w/ pure Pb to stack for easy storage

those are very nice!

whats your approximate weight on those ingots?

how to you plan to break them down into sizes that will fit into your pour pot?

have not yet used them yet,

the jet burner is currently committed to making scrapple, it will be a few days

I can vary the weight by how full I pour them

the channel is only 2" wide, it will easily slip into my RCBS Pro Melt

and they will stack nice on the back of the pro melt to pre-warm

Well, I finally got a chance to get a real good look at my moulds today, I did not have time to inspect them Friday when they were dropped off

I had plans on doing a quick once over to get any weld spatter out of the way

And as Gomer Pyle would say soup prize soup prize soup prize

My buddy that welded them up, was supposed to tig weld them, but mig welded them instead

And these welds look like speed bumps

I knew there was a reason that I had told him just bring the cut steel back to me and I will pay someone to weld them when he could not make time

It looks like I will spend several days trying to clean these up so that I can actually use them

And I will more than likely go through several carbide burrs trying to knock the weld beads down to a acceptable height

As is usual with him he always is trying to rush thru things and this was no exception

Damn union welder !

last evening there was a good stiff breeze blowing as the sun was setting & cooling down so I got busy smelting lead alloy for bullets and tried out the new ingot moulds

I ran two batches of 100 pounds each (200#'s total); 50# pure lead, 50# clip on wheel weights, and 1# of pure tin each batch

smelt pot loaded up

Image

about a quart container of sawdust added to flux/recombine

Image

the ingot moulds loaded for the first half of a batch, they are sitting on a drip tray from walmart for under your car in the garage, sitting on top of a Werner work platform so that bending over is minimized

Image

the rest of the first batch, all ingots are a single ladle of molten lead

Image

the square stack (cube) of ingots is the first batch stacked up, 49 ingots, just a tad over 2#'s for each ingot

Image

the ingot moulds dropped ingots no problem w/ the corners smeared w/ J-B weld & painted w/ BBQ black paint, although a fair amount of gas bubbles showed up on the bottom of the ingots
