Did a Smith & Wesson Model 29-2 .44 Magnum 6 1/2" made in '76 come in stainless or nickle?

both. although the stainless Smiths model numbers start with a 6 so technically it would be called a 629 not a 29.

According to my S&W Encyclopaedia, The 629, the stainless version of the M29, was introduced in 1979 with serial number
N748564. Nickle versions of the M29 were available starting with the introduction of the revolver in 1955, which was called the S&W .44 Magnum until 1957 when the number series was started. 6 1/2" was one of the standard barrel lengths until changed to 6" in 1979. They made a 6" barrel as well as a 5" barrel as custom options prior to that, and they are more rare than the 6 1/2" though the 6" usually sells for less, and the 5" commands a premium. Any stainless, or M629's, would have been at the end of the 629-2 cycle in 1990, as the 629-3 version came about in 1991, and the M29 nickel version 29-3 would have come out in 1982.
