Got a 16" CMMG upper today.

Post by rgswaim »

I've been wanting a heavier bullet AR for quite some time and recently settled on the 300 BLK. While at local range I found that they had this upper for sale. Got the upper and a Magpul folding rear sight. Ordered Lee dies from Midway. Will be at the range soon to check this out. I think I'm going to like it.

Congrats on the purchase. What is going to be your first load?

I haven't gotten that far yet. I have plenty of 296, H110 and Lil'Gun on hand to try. Any suggestions?

Soon as I get my reloading stuff I'll give these a try and chronograph them. What I'm looking for is the heaviest bullet that I can drive over 2,000 fps.

That load has an average velocity of 1944 fps. Measurements were taken at an elevation of about 500 feet at 38 degrees, overcast and light drizzle. This is not a max charge. Also, with A1680 2K should be very doable.

You listed 3 loads. Are all loads at 1944 fps or just one of them? I'm hoping it is the 147 grain bullet.

Sorry about that. Here is some better data with an additional load using the 175 SMK. Note these loads are not maxes and are rather generic. I just worked some up for reliability and economy (147's) and to use as an accuracy baseline for my carbine before modifications.

Hornady 110 V-max
19.5 H110
COAL 2.040"
AVG: 2410 fps
ES: 11 fps
AD: 4.8 fps
SD: 4.86 fps

Nosler 125 Ballistic Tip
17.5 H110
COAL 2.060"
AVG: 2144 fps
ES: 8 fps
AD: 3 fps
SD: 2.65 fps

Surplus 147 fmj
16.5 H110
COAL 2.130"
AVG: 1934 fps (almost your 2K John :P )
ES: 20
AD: 5.8 fps
SD: 6.94 fps

Sierra 175 SMK (LR118 Surplus)
19.0 A1680 Compressed
COAL 2.215"
AVG: 1782 fps
ES: 21 fps
AD: 6 fps
SD: 7.24 fps

From the load data I've seen, that's about right for the 16.5 gr H110 M80 147gr.

Edit: There you go! TMH, are those numbers for Remington or formed brass?
