I understand that I can just add any 16inch upper to my registered and stamped 12.5 MPW.
I think I can also add shorter Barrel Uppers without a Form 1. Since I didnt make the rifle I should not have to file a form 1 for construction mod. Correct?
I have no other rifle parts laying around. I would just be adding another shorter barrel in 556 is my main concern.
thanks.

Fritz,
Whatever total overall length was filed for your SBR is the shortest overall length you can have on your SBR lower.
So you can have any length lower with the equivalent length you have now and longer mounted to your lower.

A-Game, have you seen that in writing from the ATF? My understanding is different.
"Once registered as a SBR or SBS, the actual length is somewhat immaterial, as it has already been registered, as required by law, as an SBR or SBS. Furthermore, the ATF has previously issued a determination that an individual may turn an SBR or SBS back into a normal Title I gun, without need for notifying the ATF. Hence, after registering a SBR or SBS, you may change the barrel length to some other length still constituting an SBR/SBS, such as changing it from a 14.5″ barrel to an 11.5″ barrel, without violating the law and you may lawfully change the barrel length making it no longer an NFA firearm, such as changing it from a 14.5″ barrel to a 20″ barrel, without violating the law."

Re: 12.5 MPW Additional Upper Laws and options.
I am only weighing the addition of a 16 inch upper to practice and sport shoot 556 on a 16inch barrel. I would need at least an AAC 51 tooth flash hider for my can.
2. Seems that 556 MPWs are kinda hard to find and cost around 1000 so trying to just buy an upper for 8-900 bucks might not be worth it. Anyone know where to find them? in any condition?
3. Lots of people say its fine to have as many uppers as you want for the gun as long as your are going up in length on a registered form 4.
4. It just doesn't make sense to fill out a form 1 for upper changes on a factory built gun and thats what I wanted to make sure of. I guess you have to if you actually built it yourself.

Where I got my original information from was A post Robert made on Silencertalk: http://www.silencertalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=74772
It had been a long time since I read that and it looks like I remembered the post incorrectly.

Re:item #2. I purchased a complete 5.56MPW rifle. Accuracy, at best, is only mediocre. After months of trying every bullet between 40 and 77 grains, using Benchmark and H335 powder, and even sending the rifle back to AAC for inspection I finally gave up and had it rebarreled with a Daniel Defense S2W profile barrel. Accuracy problems solved. It's a nice receiver and handguard, the LW profile barrel it comes with heats up too quickly and is incapable of maintaining any accuracy.
