Varmint Bullet through Can?

Post by Uncle Fester »

I liked my 300 BO so much that I decided to build a pistol. At first, I planned to shoot a subsonic round with my Dead Air Nomad can. After thinking about it some more, I am thinking a quick expanding varmint bullet might be the way to go. Obviously, that means supersonic.

Has anyone tried this setup and how much noise suppression did you get? With the Covid, I doubt I’ll be able to find a place to do my own DB testing.

i couldnt tell you actual DB change, but you know there's a can there for sure.

takes the bark off it and much mo better to hunt with.

Depends on twist rate and bullet construction. Find out from the bullet manufacturer if there is an upper RPM limit for the bullet. Some varmint bullets are only rated to 225,000 RPM, that is easy to hit with a 1/7 twist, 2200 fps. Long shot strings make it worse with a hot barrel.

110 Varmegeddon’s come apart around 330,000 in a hot barrel and will take out every baffle in a can. That’s 2300 fps in a 1/5. There’s a thread about somewhere.

300 Blackout is actually pretty tough on bullets, for a so called under powered cartridge.
300 Blackout, not just for sub-sonics.

Is there a formula for determining the RPM a bullet is traveling using velocity and twist?

12/twist X velocity X 60 = bullet rpm.

12/5 X 2200 X 60 = 316,800

12/7 X 2200 X 60 = 226,285
