I don't think they were attacks so much as hundreds of spiders mining the site, and the server not being able to handle it.
Not only is the new server seemingly 10-20 times faster, but I put up CloudFlare caching to reduce the load, and that also offers some defenses to throttle back users who are drawing more data.

Good thinking. They just didn't seem to be supporting you so well. I applaud all your hard work and effort! Lets hope for better luck with these guys, and if they are near by me and don't support the site very well I'll walk in and start slapping people around until the job gets done300Blk wrote:I gave up on my hosting company and changed. We will see how this new company goes with a server in TX. If it is not fast enough, I can bump up the CPU cores easily enough.
Re: Forum upgrade notice:
It looks like they knew, or should have known, that the problem the entire time was their server, and they were making excusing to misdirect me to try small and insignificant optimizations that had no chance of working. We did a benchmark, and in terms of performance per dollar, this one is about 28 times better.
Most of my traffic comes from TX. CA is second.

The load average has stayed under 0.40 always so far, which is great.

This is the best I have seen the forum response time in a quite a while. Keep up the great work.

Wow that is great!300Blk wrote:The load average has stayed under 0.40 always so far, which is great.
You know I should have run the YSlow plugin on the old site and then and again now to compare utilization differences. I don't know why I didn't think of trying that when things were being problematic to help diagnose issues. Oh well hindsight I guess

So Texas has the most traffic and I am right to say CA is Kalifornia?
