Due to lack of ammo in the world and California, I've started re-loading again. Sold all my reloading equipment over 20 years ago when I entered LEO, now I've got to go back to just get ammo for my 300 that I just built. Question, a gun shop sold me Sierra 110 gr .308 bullets, box was sealed, when I got home, the bullets were very short. too short to make the OAL of the 300 to 2.260.. Is it safe to load the 300 way under that 2.260" OAL.. I shot Remington 115 and they were 2.260" so I'm not sure if .5 makes the difference in lenght.. I returned the bullets and swapped them for Hornady Vmax 125 red tip and they will go the distant 2.260".. Any input would be great..
Note: Even my loading kit is backordered, shippment in May. Thanks Mr. President..

Those bullets dont have the same ogive as the 115's, my manual says they should be 2.050" COAL. You may find that if you load the short fat bullets to 2.26" that the bolt may not lock closed on the round.

2.260 is the maximum OAL, not the desired OAL.
Re: OAL min. and max for 300..... ?
I was looking for the min. for a small fat Sierra 110 round, my Lyman book shows only the max OAL.... Also I haven't seen any 300 BLK ammo in 110 gr, again all sold out, none available. I have a magazine that shows all of the bullets the 300 can use and there are lots of them, but no spec. on the shorty fat suckers... just asking..
Re: OAL min. and max for 300..... ?
The SAMMI min is on the drawing. In practice, the most reliable ammunition is 2.100 or longer - with the exact best length depending on the bullet.
The Sierra 110 cannot be loaded to 2.100, and so is not the most reliable, but it is reliable enough for hunting.

Thanks guys for the feedback... More of my stuff ordered from Amazon just arrived... I have everything to load a 300 round but two small items.... Small Rifle PRIMERS and the LEE LOADMASTER SET.. Just a flesh wound...
I even purchased the Mini Miter Saw, started cutting 5.56 down to 300 case size. Got the Dillon CV750 tumbler, cleaned the brass daily, about 1,000 of them..
Let's hope this ammo run ends soon, DHS put in an order for over 2 billion rounds of ammo, I wonder why... Civil unrest maybe... news at ten...

I am pretty sure they asked for a five-year price on that many rounds, but that it was not placed on order. That is normal. It amounted to about 600 rounds per agent per year - which is not all that much for training.Aceman58 wrote:Let's hope this ammo run ends soon, DHS put in an order for over 2 billion rounds of ammo, I wonder why... Re: OAL min. and max for 300..... ?
I use the 30 Cal .308 110 gr SP Item #3010 with my 300 blackout. I found it works well for target shooting out to 200 yards. I load 18.6 grains lilgun @ 1.940" I got under 2" groups with a really crappy tasco scope before I put on a reflex dot sight. I found that with 2.100" the nose hit feed ramps and deformed the tip to cause it to fly really poor. Saami min specs are 1.780" so this round still works.
