I'm a avid 300 blk shooter, but I just picked up a new rifle Marlin 1895G 45-70 and can't figure out my crap loads I just shot
You guys seem to be a wealth of knowledge, so here it goes!
H4198 - 43.0 grs (Almost minimum powder load)
CCI BR-2 Large Rifle Primers
300 gr cast bullet 2.500 COL
I had 3 shots with delayed ignition and my final shot which lodged a bullet in the barrel My primers did not have consistent strike depths and factory ammo shot just fine. Is this primer ok to use with this powder or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Obviously I'm new to reloading, and could really use some help!

Re: Help with load - Off Topic
go to the Hodgdon website. their lowest staring load with a 300 grain bullet and H4198 is 53 grains
do some more research before loading more of these

HMMMM I'm using the Hornady 9th edition, guess I should reference more than one place. It states min load @ 42.3 and Max @ 51.2. Anyone else have input on data (min/Max load)?

magnum primers. You need the hot primer to light off the big load in that case.
And what AR-300 said, check out the powder manufacturers websites for the most up to date info.

You don't think the standard Large Rifle Primers will get it done?

At the risk of being obvious, hopefully you're not confusing IMR4198 with H4198.
Re: Help with load - Off Topic
The charge is low, but still should not be a "delayed" ignition. With inconsistent primer strikes I would question a hammer spring or primer seating. The delay would possibly be the primer needing to seat first before it ignites.
I use standard large rifle primers with both H and IMR 4198 with no ignition problems, but considerably more powder.
Cast bullets also bring up possible problems, Were these purchased or cast yourself? and did you verify size? Using load data for a specific jacketed bullet will not be the same for a different jacketed and certainly will be different for cast. The lead bullet will be physically smaller, filling less of the case for the same COL. another source of possible ignition problems.
The biggest question tho is why did it take at least three serious warning signs before stopping to check? Ignoring that many high pressure signs could have led to a much different conclusion.

300 Blackout, not just for sub-sonics.
Re: Help with load - Off Topic
also as an after thought I believe the only listed data for cast bullets is for a trap door but I could be wrong. my trapdoor only sees black powder
