Have been using the 150gr Speer HotCore over CFEBLK at appr 1950fps. Not a speed record by any means but accuracy is decent and the load is stable.
Was curious how the bullet would expand at this velocity so gathered up some newspaper and headed to range.
At 100 yards set up a bale of water soaked newspaper 14" deep with some old jeans folded up behind to act as a stop in case the bullet actually made it all the way through. Fired a round and went to have a look. Bullet left an exit cavity about the size of a golf ball and went through the improvised trap. Reset and tried a few more times until I was able to recover a few bullets from the berm.
As expected the expansion is not what you would see from higher velocities but recovered bullets measured in the .46-.47 range so around 150% and retained +/- 97% original weight.

Re: 150gr Speer penetration/expansion test
I think that’s about what to expect out of a regular.308 hunting bullet. Normal minimum expansion is around 1800 fps. 30-30 bullets a bit lower at around 1600.
A well placed shot within 100 yards, that bullet will work fine.

300 Blackout, not just for sub-sonics.
Re: 150gr Speer penetration/expansion test
At 100 it should be going about 1750fps with just over 1000f/lbs of energy.
Would really like to do this again at 150 and 200 to see how much difference there is in expansion and penetration.
Have to start getting more material together.

Re: 150gr Speer penetration/expansion test
I did just that with those bullets a number of years ago just to see what they did. The only difference was I used Lil'gun. There was practically no expansion but they blew almost completely through the wetpacks.
