There is a fair bit of load data available for lightweight bullets in a bolt gun but I was hoping for some quiet loads for 200 - 208gr bullets.
I have a good load for 150gr bullet using Trailboss but the 200gr bullets are too long to allow the use of Trailboss.
Anyone got a load that uses a faster pistol powder for a 200gr bullet? All the data for heavy bullets seems to be designed to cycle a semi-auto so they used slower and louder powders.

Re: Bolt Gun Loads for Heavy Bullets
How about a 250g Arsenal Cast bullet on top of IMR4198 @ 1075?

Re: Bolt Gun Loads for Heavy Bullets
Hodgdon lists loads with H110, IMR4227 etc- may help.

Re: Bolt Gun Loads for Heavy Bullets
Most of those loads are meant to cycle a semi auto action. Those powders are slower and will be louder. I'm looking for bolt gun specific loads using faster pistol powder to keep the noise to a minimum.
Re: Bolt Gun Loads for Heavy Bullets
Haven't run 'em with a can yet but the following load was accurate and all sounded subsonic for the 20 rounds I ran as a test.
Charge weights and COAL are straight from https://reloadingdata.speer.com/downloa ... ut_200.pdf
SIG factory cases, 1x fired
CCI 400 SRP
11.2 gr Accurate 5744
Speer 200gr Hot Core Spitzer SP (#2211)
Loaded to 2.160" COAL
No crimp

Re: Bolt Gun Loads for Heavy Bullets
If you use 296/H110 for a cut off as the slowest powder, it will be a good start. Quickload is a very valuable tool for this type of load.
Accurate powders #9, 7, 5, 2 can work and there is some data out there. #5 probably has the most data and works well.
Vihtavouri N110, N105 have data in Hornady and others.
Tin Star is their response to Trail Boss, but has about half the bulk. No data out there. I have some loads floating around the forum. 7-8 grains would be a good start depending on the bullet seated depth.
Many of these powders can be double charged, so be aware of that.
Old 300 whisper data can be used and generally tailored towards single shots and the powders listed above.

I’ll try and dig though some old printed data that seems to have vanished from the web.

300 Blackout, not just for sub-sonics.
Re: Bolt Gun Loads for Heavy Bullets
240 gr SMK
8.5 H-110
1050-1075 fps
16” Model 7
Omega can
It’s so quiet, we call it the pellet gun. The Omega certainly has a lot to do with it. I can’t imagine a quieter load though.

Re: Bolt Gun Loads for Heavy Bullets
190 SMK might not be considered “heavy” but it will exit a pig with enough energy to kill the pig next to it. While I have known that they will exit, I have tested it twice killing pigs on the off side.
190 grain Nosler Custom Competition (Same as SMK)
9.5 IMR 4227
1079 fps
16” Model 7
I might back this load off by .2 grains to slow it down a hair. I have noticed on very cold days it has broken the sound barrier (speed of sound slows down as temp drops).

Re: Bolt Gun Loads for Heavy Bullets
I have W296 (same as H110) and a bunch of 4227. I haven't used those in my bolt gun cause I think they will be slower burning and thus louder than powders like N320, Red Dot or Trailboss.
I use a lot of 150gr subs over 6.0gr of Trailboss, which is REALLY quiet. The limitation of trail boss is that it doesn't work with heavier ca. 200gr bullets because it totally fills the case, leaving no room to seat the bullet.
I haven't heard of Tin Star before but if it is half the bulk of Trailboss then that might be the perfect powder for super quiet 200gr subs.
I also have N340, Blue Dot and HS6 on my reloading bench and was kinda hoping for 200gr loads for powders like those. I have worked with AA#5 before but found the velocities to vary quite a lot, which is a bit alarming to say the least.
