Yep, it's used in bowling, baseball, darts, removing barrels....

If you're really out of ideas, you could rough up the surface a bit with crocus cloth, sandpaper or a bead blaster. It'll be under the handguard or float tube so nobody else will know. No, not my first choice but it might help.

You could wrap the barrel with several rubber bands to increase friction then put it into the blocks and vise.

I've had excellent results using a couple of pieces of leather. Smooth side touching barrel believe it or not. I use a 4x4 and a spade bit and then cut in 1/2 longitudinally with a band saw. Never tried it but cutting a groove on a couple of 2x4s would work well too.

Maybe I have an old belt or a shoe I can cut up. What part of rural northern IL? Grew up in Morris myself.

I've also heard of using powdered sugar.

The Magpul Bev block will prevent your barrel from spinning. It engages the bolt lug openings n the barrel extension and is flat below that to allow it to seat in a vice and prevent twisting and turning. You may not want to spend any money, I get that, but for $40-$50 on something that will save you headache on this and any future endeavors it is well worth it. My local Bass Pro stocks these. If you have a BP or Cabela's you may find they do too.
