Cart Before the Horse?

Post by ProdigalSun »

I will be building an SBR from a CMT PDW lower, do I need to get the form 1 when I get the lower shipped, or can I buy the lower now, and wait to get the stamp before I buy the barrel? This will be bought piece by piece over the course of the summer, and will very likely run into the fall before it's done.

Buy lower as you have to have SN for the form 1, then submit form 1, get approved, build. You can have all the parts together as a pistol then when form 1 is approved put the stock on, that is the easiest way to go about it.

File the form 1 as soon as possible. Remember that you will have a few months wait for the stamp. Plenty of time to gather the rest of the parts, or as rpk said, use as a pistol.

Ok thanks. It's been a while since I set up the trust, and Im finally getting close to picking up a lower, and getting this project started.

^^ this

build/test it as a pistol - that way you know you have a working configuration while you're waiting for your stamp. when the stamp arrives, get the engraving done, pull the pistol buffer tube and install the stock and regular buffer assembly. no second guessing getting your now engraved lower back, going through assembly and there's some manufacturing flaw with it that makes it inoperable.

good luck!

You might want to be careful about trying a pistol build with that particular lower. Since that stock is somewhat integral to the lower.

Please explain your statement. It is perfectly legal to build it as a pistol as long as you have a buffer tube that a stock will not attach to. Also, legally a pistol lower can be changed to a rifle but a rifle lower cannot be changed to a pistol. Just make sure that the lower is not designated as "rifle" on the 4473 when it purchased and you can build it as a pistol first.

The question is how the stock mounts. The cheek rest/stock actually mounts to the lower. It's a valid question.

Beat me to it. Yeah even if you put on a pistol buffer the stock maybe still works. Not saying its legal or not. Just saying be careful.

Without the vertical drop portion, that is added after the buffer tube, it would still be a pistol with a funky looking lower.
