Like you farm use, after the first of the year I will load up some stuff with Red Dot, Unique and whatever else I can grub up and put it through the testing phase. Phase one is always, great it went bang and came out the end of the barrel. Getting a bullet stuck absolutely mortified me when I started and I used a lot of powder starting high and working down with no chronograph. You really shouldn't attempt this without one because you won't have info to learn from. That being said, the Trail Boss load for the 90 xtp's should go here.
Rifle - AAC handi rifle
Can - AAC Cyclone
Load- .309 Hornady xtp
4.5 gr of Trail Boss
COAL - 1.738
Winchester Small rifle primer ( hammer extension will not pop magnum primers 100% )
Light LFC
950 - 1000 MV (No that's not my ES, just not in front of my notes )
Accuracy - I took a rabbit this year at 60-65 yards. Head shot. Here is a thread I started about shooting muskrats. There is a Bullseye load in this thread.

Just under 1 inch group at 50 yds, will definitely continue testing this one. May try increasing OAL just a bit, see if I can get it more consistent and just a tad slower.

Wow! Thanks IJ, that's a great start! Looks promising. I can't wait to load some and try. Work and holidays pretty much has me tied up now.

Re: Single shot light subs sticky
I have had dozens of H&R's. The single best thing anyone can do to one is to toss the factory hammer spring and replace it with a WOLFE EXTRA POWER SPRING!! Midway & Brownells both carry them.rebel wrote:Like you farm use, after the first of the year I will load up some stuff with Red Dot, Unique and whatever else I can grub up and put it through the testing phase. I just loaded up a few of these XTP/TB loads to try in my Ruger... They don't feed form the mag, but single loaded will be OK for testing...

Re: Single shot light subs sticky
Thanks. I want to mess around with some light bullets too. Plan on loading some of the Hornady XTP 90gr pistol bullets when I can find them. I just picked up these 150s cuz they were $31/250 delivered.farm use wrote:Thats awesome right there! But I want a little lighter bullet. I got some of the plated 120gn bullets in the mail today. I look forward to your range report on those 120s.

Did some more testing today. Decided to give up on bullseye, for now at least. At 50 yards it was "grouping" around 2.5-3 inches, if you can still call that a group. I am definitely going to keep working up Unique though.

All of the loads with Unique that I have tested so far have had a very high ES, but it is just the first one that is way off from the rest. For the rest of my testing with Unique I will test in groups of 10 instead of 5. The load at 1.95" was definitely more accurate than the load at 1.905". Going to continue working it up.
