Reloading Die Question

So I had this Lee 300 BLK die set ordered until I read some feedback from other users:

http://www.amazon.com/Lee-Precision-Bla ... ckout+dies

Now I'm on the hunt for a different die set.

Would this set from RCBS work?

What is the difference between that set and the small base set?

I'll probably still get the Lee FCD.

Thanks!!

I just went through this with my 223 AR. The standard 223 dies set is just that, standard. The small base 223 die set uses the same seater/crimper die as the standard, with a small base sizer dies that sizes my cases .002" smaller than the regular one. The AR series dies have the small base sizer, and the seater/crimper uses a taper crimp instead of a roll crimp. I'd guess the 300blk dies work the same.

If you're gonna get the Lee FCD, which is a collet crimp, then save 10 bucks and get the small base die set, not the AR series die set

They are not the same. You want to get the small base one. Its sizes the brass smaller but it helps with cycling in ar-15 platform. I believe the small base dies are the best sizing dies you can get for the 300 blackout.

It's a mystery to me why the "AR series" 300blk dies from RCBS cost way less than the "standard" dies.

Just note that "small base" will not help you with brass that has expanded bases in most cases. The expansion (more correctly plastic flow) happens below the point where any normal reloading die can size.

So just to make sure I understand,
the AR series Small base set part is what everyone recommend between those two options?

I am a long time Lee die user in all calipers EXCEPT in 300 Blackout.
For this caliber, I have had zero issues using the Hornady 300 BLK/Whisper dies. I use them for forming brass from 223/5.56 cases and general reloading 110gr - 220gr bullets.
