Sierra Matchkings 125gr

Post by Klondike »

I am working up loads with the 125gr SST's for hunting and also have some matchkings on order.

Anyone use the Sierra's for hunting? Description seems to indicate a thicker jacket for a match bullet like the Berger VLDs which are an outstanding match turned hunting bullet in other calibers.

Any experience and recipes appreciated.

I wouldn't use the SMK for hunting. Unless it was maybe yotes, or squirrels.

...and CNS hits ONLY. I HAVE used MK's to kill lots of critters, unless you cns hit them, they WILL get away. I used to use a R700 Sendero in 300 Win Mag with 190MK's @ 3k fps and woodchucks would crawl away with a shoulder hit. Had to head shoot them.

Bummer - I guess I was misinformed on that. 300 Blackout is basically the only short action caliber I reload - everything else is really large and the berger and Amax at certain weights and calibers make great medium to large game loads.

Love the shape of the 125 SMK - they need to be like berger and develop a similar shaped bullet and expand the case wall a bit.

If you can get them, 110 gr Barnes designed for blackout, if not Hornady 125 sst or Nos 125 bt are good hunting bullets.

I have 200 125gr SST's I am loading.

Nosler green tips and Barnes black tips are all but impossible to find these days.
