Having a couple AR15's I have collected a bunch of mags. Some I have setup with hollow points, steel core, tracers, and blanks. I have mags loaded with each marked using different colored original MagPul loops. Given that they are safe to fire in any of my AR15's I am not to worried with them. I also store them in different locations or ammo cans for different purposes.
I now have a 300 BLK upper on the way and got concerned about keeping those mags separated from the 5.56 mags.
How are you guys doing it? I am thinking of picking up something like PMags and dedicating them to the 300 BLK. I like the idea of being able to tell by feel the difference to prevent problems. Its also easier to tell the wife what to grab if I send her after a rifle/mags from the safe.

Different color PMAGs for the BLK, if you must.
I don't keep many mags fully loaded. Paranoid about the springs getting worn out.

+1. Only thing I haven't figured out yet is how to mark my 300BLK PMags for 'sub-sonic' and 'supersonic' rounds. And no, I'm not getting yet one more color to distinguish between them.FarmerTed1971 wrote:Different color PMAGs for the BLK, if you must.

That'll work. I use Orlite mags for the BLK.FarmerTed1971 wrote:Different color PMAGs for the BLK, if you must.
On that note. Does anyone know who has unmodified Orlite mags for sale?

Re: Magazine Segregation
I'll be darned. I just checked What a Country yesterday and they were out of stock. For anyone thinking about Orlite. You want to call What a Country and ask for UNFILED magazines. They just file down the whole rib and you run into a problem when inserting a mag with the bolt locked open. There is nothing stopping the mag for being over-inserted. You want unfiled mags and then you can file it yourself. File the rib from the top down taking just enough off so that the mag will insert and lock into place, but still have enough rib intact to seal up the bottom of the mag well, and stop the mag from over insertion.gwp wrote:$9.50 (used) at https://www.apexgunparts.com/product_in ... cts_id/881L1A1Rocker wrote:That'll work. Thanks for searching for these. I was really having trouble with my google-fu for some reason.

Springs get worn out from use, not from sitting compressed for a long time. You can store them loaded without fear of damage or failure.FarmerTed1971 wrote:I don't keep many mags fully loaded. Paranoid about the springs getting worn out.

Re: Magazine Segregation
I'm not sure what image to use yet, but I plan to mark my 300 mags by stippling them. Here's some pictures of my first three attempts at it:
Re: Magazine Segregation
I have seen a few of your examples of stippling on a couple sites. Its not a bad idea as it would give tactile feedback as to what you are grabbing in the dark. I am just not sure if I have the time or energy to do it. All of my other mags are metal, so I was thinking that Pmags for the blackout would be the best. I had not considered orlite as I had not seen them mentioned in a while.
Re: Magazine Segregation
Aside from a gen1 pmag I converted when I first got my upper, I have been using emags for my 300blk ammo. I also used an xacto knife to cut a little edge off the 5.56 bullet imprint on the mags, so it looks more like a 300 round.
For sorting what ammo is in what mag, I use colored electrical tape. UMC gets no tape, subsonic gets a band of white around the base, soft or ballistic points get yellow with the type written in sharpie (v-max, 150 or 165), tracers red, and FMJ handloads green.
