Issues reloading/ neck sizing

Post by WileyCoyote »

So I'm not new to reloading, but I just recently started reloading 300blk. The problem I'm running into is when I seat 200gr lee PCd cast bullets (sized to 309) the necks will warp to an oblong shape on one side. Some of the bullets I've tried have been gas checked others have not. I'm using a universal neck expander and the brass is all reformed 233/556. I used these bullets all the time on reformed 308 brass with no issues so I'm lost for what's going wrong. Any ideas?

Pictures are worth 1,000 words. Without seeing what is happening it will be hard to determine a cause and then a cure.

Take the die apart and see if there is any build up of lead or coating somewhere.

I would recommend adjusting you belling die.
Set it up so that the mouth is wide enough to allow the projectile to sit in the case.
Once you seat the bullets, use a Lee FCD to remove the case belling.

With MILSPEC brass, the walls are thicker, which will make for thicker necks.
This of course, will create additional neck tension.
Use a micrometer to measure inside of the necks after sizing.
Optimally, they should be .002" smaller than the projectile.

I've heard this happens with the universal expander. Maybe go to NOE and use there expander that goes into the Lee expander die. Might solve your problem

Anyone want to take bets on whether he posts again?

I am feeling a bit optimistic so I will say yes but that is not where I would put my money.

I did not think that a picture would be able to pick up the problem I'm running into, but it actually did. If anyone knows how to upload a picture from an iPhone then I think you guys would be able to get a better idea of what's going on.

You need to post it to something like tinypic or photobucket and post the link here.

Hopefully this works. You can see the problem I'm running into is the left side of the neck is forced out.
