Lee 309-230-5R

Post by CPC24 »

I just got this mold and it drops perfect boolits. They measure right at .309, and weigh between 229 and 231 grains with WW alloy. I have quite a few that are exactly 230.0! I read reviews here, and people say it's not that good. I can put gas checks on, or coat them if I have to. I just ordered some Hornady ELD-X 212 grain for accuracy work. I still have a few A-Max 208 grainers left, too. Is this Lee 230 grain decent for for plinking?

Yes it is decent for plinking.

I have been thru 3 of these molds, 2 of them have been less then perfect, and this is from a Lee Precision Fan boy. Lee makes some good affordable products, however this mold is hit or miss

For heavy grn .30 caliber bullets I always recommend many offerings from NOE.

I must have gotten a good one, because they turned out perfect! It's too cold to go to the range to test them, though. I have an NOE 311284 mold, but the boolits are too fat. They get stuck in the chamber. I might need to sell or trade that mold.

the NOE 311-230 FN Blackout is a NOE take on the lee design.

Also the NOE 311-247 FN Whisper is a good choice

another one is the NOE 311-198 SP

That NOE mould has its ogive way out on the edge of the bullet. Seriously doubt it was meant for 300 blackout.

I am having a hard time finding where NOE 311284 was mentioned in this thread.

It's nice and warm here today, so I got out to the range. The Lee boolits worked very well; no keyholing or leading. I loaded 10.5 grains 1680 at 2.23" OAL. I used my pistol build with a 8.5" CMMG barrel. I didn't have my chronograph, but i didn't hear the supersonic crack. I shot some paint cans, etc. The boolits tumbled after hitting, with a bit of expansion. The drop at 75 yards was only 5-6". All in all, I'm quite satisfied. I even got my leftover 311284 rounds to feed manually.
