350 Legend

Post by cwlongshot »

Any one here on board with this one?

I have been a 357 Maxi fav since 1983 when I bought my first one!!

I picked mine up last week. (RARR) and shot 20 last night.. good showing for first shots. it sighted easily and shot about a 1" 50 yard group before I concentrated on 4" targets on the 250yard berm... I smacked them with regularity.

Pretty happy so far.

I don’t have one but the cartridge has caught my attention, so am very interested in your results.

It is very close to some very classic cartridges, loaded to modern velocity. There was a 35-40 Maynard that held its own in competition and is still used. I know of guys using it for black powder silhouette, probably the lightest cartridge that is successful. Basically a 38-55 necked down to .360 and a straight taper and a bit shorter if I’m thinking right. There was also a 30-40 Krag necked up to 35. Cant go wrong with 300 grain+ bullets.

There were a number of 35 caliber auto loaders and pumps 100 years ago that we’re popular. They worked well, just not popular. It will be interesting to see how it is received now.
300 Blackout, not just for sub-sonics.

Headspacing off the mouth in an AR is a hard pass for me. It would be interesting TC cartridge, but there is already the 357max in that lane. I can see the allure for hunters who have "straight wall" cartridge restrictions.

I have a 16” AR barrel on order. Southern Michigan is a straight-walled rifle area and I intend to put the hurt on a few deer with it this year.

I’ll keep you posted!

i almost pulled the trigger on a BCA upper this week.. but i want one in 20, or maybe 18"... they only offer 16" right now.

hate to see a performance loss from the 4" barrel difference where this was designed to be in the happy zone at.

just a matter of time i'm sure though

Plant, I'd say Chuck is spot on calling out Winchester on their marketing scheme. Not to say it's not a decent cartridge, but he gives a compelling look at how new cartridges are marketed. Just wish more would call out Hornady for the truth. Such as " We designed from the ground up, a cartridge that performs in the realm of other premier 6.5 cartridges. Not quite as accurate as the 6.5 x 47 Lapua and not quite the speed of the 260 Remington."
But how would that sell?
Glad CW got one because once he gets over the orgasmic glow of buying a new rifle  ( I experience the same thing CW so don't take that personal. ) he will give an honest review of the round from a handloaders perspective.
I am not bound by straight wall laws, if I was I'd use my 45-70 or 444 Marlin.
I'm not calling it a gimmick round, it fills a void, but as said a 357 Max has been there, done that.

ya.. i wasnt knocking on chuck at all.. the guy - from what ii can tell as a non subscriber anyway - calls it like it is. to the point and usually with a minimal amount of nonsense getting there.

just an interesting take that my google-fu came up with that you probably wont find anywhere else but there is all :)

That's a bad day right there. WTH was Winchester thinking?

Personally, I have no interest in the 350 legend. If someone were to make a "400 legend" based on the 6.8 case I might be persuaded.
