Speer 130 HP with W296

Post by 10Driver »

I thought this Speer 130 HP was a good bullet for the 300 Blackout. I jumped on buying and ended up with several boxes.

https://www.speer-ammo.com/en/bullets/r ... -hp-bullet

There isn’t lots of information on this site about reloading with this bullet. I’m going to load it per the Speer Number 15 manual except they don’t list W296 (or H110) for this bullet.

Speer does list W296 for the 110 grain and 150 grain. I was going to begin with the 150 grain data which starts W296 at 16.7 with a max of 18.4 grains.

COAL - 2.060”

Is anyone else using this Speer 130 HP for 300 Blackout?

I have some, loaded a small sample with a start charge of 18.0 gr H110. They shot very well, just have not returned to that loading. So many other test projects in the works. OAL/feeding issues can arise with that blunt HP, you just have to load some and test.

The 6th column over is velocities. Not less than 15 test samples, taken at 10 ft from the muzzle. 16 inch barrel.

I hope this is of some help.

I did a dummy round with the Speer 130 HP and it seems to feed from the magazine just fine. I whiffed the seating die depth and missed the Speer 2.06 COAL and ended up at 2.055 but only on the dummy round.

Chambered it a few times with no set back or stretch with converted once fired mil brass

Put together several rounds with 17.0 grains of WW296, CCI 41 primers, and 2.06 COAL with no crimp.

I thought I’d do a few with 16.7 grains and a couple at 17.2 grains of the WW296.

A couple of the loading manuals have much lower starting loads for their 125 grain bullets and WW296. Specifically Hornady seems to have the lowest.

The Winchester powder web page has data for WW296 and this Speer 130 HP.

The Winchester page shows 17.1 grain min - 18.6 grain max.

Of course, nothings simple and straight forward.

Speer shows COAL of 2.060” and the Winchester 296 powder page says a COL 2.005”

Looks like I’ve started my ladder below minimum powder charge. Probably not ideal for WW296 loads, but I didn’t put together that many rounds.

So, which do I trust for seating depth?
