220 grain bullets and 4227

Post by JFCisme »

My AR is a DoubleStar Hunter AR-15 A3 Upper Receiver Assembly 300 AAC Blackout 16" Barrel 5/8"-24 Threaded Muzzle with Thread Protector on a DPMS lower. A Silencerco Omega was on throughout.

The Bolt action is a Ruger American Ranch Rifle with the screw on adapter for the Omega. Scope is a Primary Arms 1-6x.

When I loaded these at 9.0 grains of 4227 the bolt would not lock back on the last shot in my AR.

I put all these bullets through my .309 Lee Sizer Die. This doesn’t require Alox as the Hi-Tek coating lubes them.

Note Berry’s Bullets are loaded with 9.4 grains of 4227 in this example. When I loaded all of them with 9.0 grains of 4227 the Berry’s bullets had a POI two inches lower than the Hi-Tek bullets. With this load the POI is the same as the Hi-Tek bullets at 9.2 grains of 4227. The copper coat really slows these down.

Thank you for sharing your data. I am a novice an about to embark on handloading with a setup that is very similar to yours. I had trouble with factory ammo and suppression. At 9.2 grains, were you satisfied with the suppression you were getting? Again, thank you very much for your generosity.

Noise is pretty subjective. I think my Omega is pretty awesome. My goal was to make one load that is suitable for both rifles. My AR has to cycle reliably and lock the bolt back on an empty magazine. I also want to do gun games and need my AR to wallop steel under 100 yards.

Since you stated you're a novice reloader, you should have the tools to be successful. Use a chamber gauge to check your brass before and after loading. Also, have a good dial micrometer. I don't make my rounds 2.26", because of ogive and 220 grain bullets.

Have fun
