Custom Barrel - Just to ask

Post by Cmwiggen »

I am getting a custom 8.5 inch barrel done and I can pick any twist. Mostly for subs but will use it for suppers too (2/3 subs, 1/3 suppers). Any twist possible, what would you suggest. 1/7, 1/7.5, 1/8? All the barrel manufacturers seem to be going to 1/7 but just thought I would ask.

I've grown partial to 1/6.

You really won't notice a difference unless you shoot a lot of really long bullets far.

1/7 just for the fact that they stabilize 240gn slugs better. Won't make a difference for supers.

1:6? I am probably just going to shoot 220 grain and not 240. I haven't heard of 1:6 until you guys mentioned it. Are you guys getting noticeably better accuracy with 1:6?

I haven't shot a 1:6, but can state with certainty that Nosler Custom Competition 220's wobble from my 1:7. My next sub barrel will be 1:6.

I can't say that I have noticed "better" accuracy, but I have certainly not noticed a drop. Sub MOA accuracy with fast supers is not a problem. I have not had the chance to shoot a long barrel 1/6 for max velocity yet, so I can't say what will happen with a 110 bullet at say 24-2700 fps

The trend in bullets is more copper and less lead, this is causing bullets to become longer. So a 200 grain Barnes at 1.625 or 194 Lehigh at 1.525 will potentially have more stability problems than say a 220 SMK at 1.489.

Some say that getting a full rotation of the bullet helps improve accuracy, to get that in a 1/7 you basically need a 9" barrel, you lose about 1.75" to the chamber.

For what it's worth, Sig 300 Blackout barrels are 1/6, and I know for a fact that there are some 1/5's out there.

Interesting, thanks guys, I will probably get the 1:6. Long story short, I was going to have Bartlein Barrels do the blank and a local guy profile it. Bartlein can do the 1:7 but will charge and extra $160 for the 1:6. I am interested enough now in the 1:6 to see what barrel manufacturer you guys know of that can turn that kind of blank.

Also, since I was corrected on twist rate, what about grove count? I was planning on 5R but should I go 4 or even 3 groove?

These guys have done two for me in 1/6 and a couple of others. They will make it however you want.
