Hi Everyone,
Newbie re-loader here.Just want to ask your opinion if my 300 blk brass with the scratch/dent near the shoulder is ok to reload. These came from factory cartridges that I shot once. When I did shoot them the first time, they had those scratches already. I reloaded them and shot the 2nd time and I think it got additional scratches.
Also any opinion on what is causing them ?
TIA

Hi, and welcome! Sounds like you have a new barrel. The marks are most likely caused during extraction. As the brass clears the chamber the ejector cocks the brass over so that it rakes across the back of the barrel extension lugs. It will probably calm down with break in. I looked into it, here is what i found in video.

it could also be the bottom of the BCG rubbing on them during cycling.
either way little "snakebites" really aren't a huge concern.

Re: Question on 300 BLK brass casing scratch/dent
Thanks for all your reply. Just wanted to make sure that the brass are still safe to reload.
The riffle is indeed new. I think I just ran 250+ bullets through it.
Also, aside from letting the rifle break in through normal usage, is there anything else I can do to speed up the break in process ?
Thanks!

While you are watching tv, hand cycle (full bcg movement) the bolt with the charge handle a few hundred times.pinoybug wrote:Thanks for all your reply. Just wanted to make sure that the brass are still safe to reload.

....although safe to reload and fire a 2nd time, I'd monitor those cases after each firing just to be safe.....
I had some cases that were gouged like that shown on the 3rd & 4th in your picture, the gouges causing the casing wall to be thinner within the gouge itself and right at the neck/shoulder juncture where pressure during ignition is high and stress is high during resizing. The gouges could develop into cracks sooner than later... personal experience here....
