H110/W296 with 125 gr sst's..

Post by jbcricket »

Hey guys,

I've been tinkering with some loads for my blackout using H110 and W296 with these 125 gr sst's. I recently worked up some loads to a hair over max according to the latest hornady manual with both powders but i was not happy with the velocity. I'm hoping to get these bullets running over 2300 fps out of my 16" wilson barrel. My pie in the sky goal was 2400 fps but i'm sure i wont reach that, however anything i can get over 2300 would be nice. I dont have my data in front of me but i think once i reached 19.0 gr of H110 and 18.0 gr of W296 (both of which are slightly over max in the book) i was still hovering around 2200 fps. My question is has anyone tested loads from 19-20 gr of either of these powders with any 125 gr bullets and if so, how'd it pan out?

I am not slamming you, so please don't take that way 8) Why are you trying to push them so hard when they open up at lower speed? No matter what the book says h110 and w296 are the same powder. There are lot variances and you should always start low and work up. My load is 18 gr of w296 with a coal of 2.11. I tested sst's in wetpack and they will expand at lower velocities, but you get the full lead wonder mushroom at 100 yards with the load stated previously. I never take speed over accuracy and 20gr of h110/w296 is primer popping hot at my coal. Now if your loading for a bolt, and loading way long, you might get away with it,. I will almost guarantee most handloaders here will take precision over uber speed. Good luck!

You can hit 2400 if you really try. Probably not twice, though.

If you really want to get much faster than 2200 you probably need a longer barrel or a bolt gun.

Accuracy over speed all day/any day. My load ended up being 17.8g W296 @ 2.168. Puts it around 2150 fps. Could I push it faster, yes but why when I shoot sub-moa with the listed.

If ultra high velocity is what you are after, maybe a 300 that doesnt end in "BLACKOUT" would be a better choice

I dont understand hot-rodding a ctg like the Blackout. So many other ways to get velocity outta an AR

Well i figured i was gonna get reprimanded for this post, and i understand why. Although the "rolling eyes" face is not necessary, i know what you guys are saying is true. And i realize that the 300 blackout was never intended for high velocities, i'm just one of those people who thinks he has to get the absolute most velocity out of every round for some reason. I"ll probably just stop where i'm at and see what kind of accuracy i can get. Its just that i could have swore that in the past i saw advertized velocities over 2300 fps with 125gr bullets from the little 300 and it seems like as the round has grown in popularity the loads have slowed down... perhaps for good reason. I just figured i'd throw it out there and see if anyone had tried this and i thought if anyone had it'd be someone on this forum. Anyways thanks for the insight everyone.

PS- by the way, a while back i was able to reach well over 2100 fps with 150 gr nosler bt's without any super crazy pressure signs and i think thats why i thought it wouldnt be too out of line to get to 2300 with the 125's...

Maybe not. But keep in mind that nobody knows anybody on the Internet. I think your mention of hoping for 2400fps made a few folks think "here's a guy who's about to break something." The rolling eyes thingie is a short, concise way of expressing that thought. Besides, Rebel already had the polite, informative post covered.

Understood. You're young, right? BTDT. You may not believe this now, but eventually you'll be putting a 12 lb. spring in your .45 and loading 4 grains of Unique.

2300 is certainly possible with a flat based, 125 grain bullet. The 125 smk was actually designed to run at 2250.

You will need to load long to keep from building excess pressure and verify that your chamber is cut to spec. This load will be dangerous in a Noveske barrel or any others that have a "match" type barrel. It has been posted many times on the forum:
Sierra 125 SMK
18.5 H110
2.245 col.

This is on the long end of the recommended length and will feed from the magazine in AR's.

The short OAL of the last loading was in hope it was similar in length to others listed near that weight range, but it didnt quite work out as I wanted.

The other bullets have to be loaded short to feed well with fully loaded magazines. The Sierra 125 was custom designed by me and Sierra to be loaded as long as 5.56mm ammo (2.230 is good, but no longer than 2.245).

Start low, work up and be careful.

Fwiw, I have ran over 2400fps in a bolt gun with a 125 SMK, it required a col of 2.40 to keep the load safe.
300 Blackout, not just for sub-sonics.
