We have cast with block at 250F to 280F with little or no whiskers on them.
Ran the heat up to 320F and started to get a little more as the heat increased.
We didn't start to get frosty bullets until we got to 380F to 400F.
So if you are getting any frosting you are running way to hot for this bullet.

Pot temp. 700F - set and forget -
Use a fan to cool the blocks too.

Swede,

Thank you for your thoughts on the 'Whiskers'. we had emailed a couple times regarding it and I was going to send the mold in for you to take a peek at, but that wont be necessary now that you have reproduced it.

I still get them even from an ice cold mold, but I think that is my alloy (Random range scrap). Last night I cast some up and found the whiskers were easy to remove with a #11 scalpel, and then I started just using my rubber gloved hand to remove them. Nice and quick and after powder coating them with the dry tumble method they look great.

I had one thought, what about plugging up the last 3 vent lines near the tip? High temp gasket maker or even jb weld should hold up to the heat. It is just a thought and I wanted to bounce it off you first as I'm sure you have a ton more knowledge of if that would work.

Rushthezeppelin
Using my mold over the last three days has got it seasoned (oxidized) real well
You may have to use a very light smoking with a BIC lighter at first, but keep it
very light.

Others have suggested using "mold release" to paint in the vent lines
Never tried it but it sounds like it may work

I have yet to actually use it but I filled my vent lines with Zyp NiB mold release agent. It is an industrial mold release that I have used on molds before that were sticky but because it builds up I thought it would be perfect for this.

Dolomite, did you coat the cavities too, or cover them? I thought about leaving bullets in the mold from the last cast, and coating one block that way, to keep the cavities clean. Probably doesn't matter too much though. I have a dry lube moly spray made by LPS that goes on like paint, and fills vent lines nicely. It works fine in the cavities as well, but does make the bullets cast smaller of course.

A more permanent solution is to use a center punch next to each vent line to block it off, this is done a little ways back from the cavity edge, and then requires lapping to remove the high spots. It's not something most casters should attempt though, since it's easy to screw up an expensive mold.

My mold also gets whiskers even when it's cold. It's weird to get wrinkly bullets and whiskers at the same time; I've never had another mold that does this.

Never thought about leaving he bullets in the mold then coating. I cleaned the mold cavities out then I wiped the faces off against the grain to leave the mold release agent in the vent grooves.

The reason why we are seeing whiskers is the weight of the lead is being concentrated at the nose.

Yes, there's more weight at the nose, from the column of lead above it, but the nose shape doesn't affect that. It could be a bore ride round nose, and the weight/pressure at the nose would be the same (for the same length nose).

Besides, mine makes whiskers all the way up the nose and on the first driving band once the mold is warmed up. They do wipe off easily, but it would be better to not need to.

Any loads worked up yet?

Ran IMR4227 and H110 through QuickLoad and get the following
Added Lil'Gun 5/16

COL 2.095" 20" barrel
IMR4227
16.8Gr. 1993FPS 38053PSI 101.9% L.D.
17.5Gr. 2062FPS 42613PSI 105.6% L.D.
H110
17.1Gr. 2047FPS 37434PSI 88.5% L.D.
17.8Gr. 2123FBS 42622PSI 92.1% L.D.
Lil'Gun
16.8Gr. 2096FPS 37751PSI 89.8% L.D.
17.4Gr. 2159FPS 42577PSI 93% L.D.

COL 2.095" works in my Remington bolt action
So starting with that

Anyone have anything else?
