I know the Rule book for Heavy metal division states a minimum cartridge of .308 Win/7.62x51. I saw in another forum stating that the rule had changed to a minimum caliber of .308. Is this true or could it have been a local thing?
My main question is how do you quantify a minimum cartridge? I understand having a minimum caliber for a power factor or division I do not understand minimum cartridge. You can load 9mm, 40cal, 45acp ect.... to major or minor power factors.
could you not load the .308 win way down and have a Light shoting 308?

Many matches seem to go by different rules. Major power factor for a rifle in USPSA is 320pf. I think for heavy metal you still need a .308win. Here is the page with all the rules for USPSA http://www.uspsa.org/uspsa-rules.php

My local club set the minimum PF at 360. A 175 would need to be going 2,057 fps to achieve this. I'm not sure if that's possible or not, but if so it would be hot load in a long barrel.
Re: 300blk in 3gun Heavy Metal competition
330 PF can be made with a 175 and A1680 powder in a 16 inch barrel at 55,000 psi.
Try a 220 with supersonic velocities. QuickLoad thinks 1600 fps is possible from a 16 inch. That is a 350 PF.
20 inch - 1167 fps, PF = 366.

Re: 300blk in 3gun Heavy Metal competition
The huge problem with He-Man is the fact there is not accepted set of rules as far as equipment goes.
Most Match Directors require 308 as a minimum. 308 the caliber, not the bullet diameter.
While you can easily make major with the 220s, shooting them as distance would suck.
My 20 inch 300 makes major with 155s, and I can still reload the brass. To make it with a 16 inch gun, the primer pockets are pretty much trash.

The International multi-gun association (IMA) matches allow 300blk in there heavy metal divisions.

Some do, some dont. It is up to the Match Director.ramrod wrote:The International multi-gun association (IMA) matches allow 300blk in there heavy metal divisions.

That's kind of pushing the 300 BLK too hard for that PF. If you get into those numbers something like our 30 ARX wildcat is where you need to go. The web page for the 30 ARX is http://www.6mmar.com/30_ARX.phpsnipecatcher wrote:My local club set the minimum PF at 360. A 175 would need to be going 2,057 fps to achieve this. Re: 300blk in 3gun Heavy Metal competition
The purpose of the heavy metal or the He-man division is for large caliber weapons, .308, 12 Gauge pump and single stack .45. Many, including myself would like to run 300BLK but do not want to pay the recoil penalty running it against .223 guns. Individual organizations came make the determination themselves but allowing 300BLK in heavy metal is a bastardization of the intent of the division.
Here locally in IN we have decided against allowing 300BLK in heavy metal, instead keeping true to the divisions original intent of .308 caliber or larger, despite several of us wanting to run 300BLK in our matches. If you can find an event that allows 300BLK in heavy metal go for it but in my experience unfortunately HM isn't very popular so you won't have much competition.

Re: 300blk in 3gun Heavy Metal competition
I'm going to try running my 300 BLK in a 3 gun comp. I'm not a contender for a win so I don't think the recoil penalty is going to hurt me much. I go to these comps to compete against myself, not game it to win.
