Elk Hunting with the 300 BLK. What bullet would you choose?

Post by mj36639 »

Im going to use a 16 inch barreled 300 BLK AR for elk season this year. It will likely be a Roosevelt Elk spike only hunt in the dense coastal range of the Pacific NW. One of the old timers in my hunting party fills many elk tags every year using a Ruger Mini-30 in 7.62x39.

Im thinking a bullet that will penetrate deeply through thick hide and bone while remaining intact is a must. The 110 Barnes black tip reportedly performs well but they are sold out everywhere. Any thoughts on the Barnes 130 grain TTSX, Sierra 125 grain Pro Hunter, or should I look at a heavier bullet with a lower velocity like the 150 grain Speer Hot Cor or Nosler Partition?

You can find Barnes vortex if you search. The bullets alone are hard to find but loaded ammo is easy to find. That is the only round I would use if I were to use the blackout.

Elk are big animals. IMHO, .308 with a well constructed bullet would be minimum.

How do you reconcile that with all of the people who Elk hunt with handguns and archery?

Barnes black tip should easily get the job done in the range most people take elk (since 90% of hunts I've seen involve stalking to within 50yds), shooting the head should be an easy task with optics, and the short barrel versions would make movement through brush much easier.

I seen spikes get tagged with 30.06 in the vitals only to run off over 3 miles.
