Best 1in 8" twist bullet weight for 200m accuracy

Post by moto vita »

I need to order some bullets to try to find a good load for 200m silhouette. Gun is AR15 10.5" pistol, I have H110 powder to use, not interested in subsonic. I'm looking for a bullet weight range to start with, or specific bullet/load recommendations, need accuracy and wind resistance.
Thanks

140-150gr is best, found the cheap hornady 150SPP to be very accurate in my 10" 1:8 pistol but i don't shoot 200 with it. It's a flat base heavy jacket exposed tip one. 140ish gets most powder with wind bucking and weight to have an effect on target. 110 vmax has decent bc and it pretty accurate for me, least trajectory problem at distance due to HV.

Such a well timed post for me. I am trying to work up a load for my new rifle and gives me some very useful info.

I've had tons of experience with a 1:8 twist GEN1 Noveske barrel.
220 SMKs (PN: 2240C) are sub MOA without any issue.

If you are really paranoid about the barrel twist, 200 grain Lapua Subsonic (PN:LU4PL7060) is incredible as well:

My 1:8 twist Daniel Defense Barrels REALLY like the 125 gr Speer TNT and the 130gr Speer Varminter. They DO NOT like ANY 110gr. If you want to spend more, they also like the 150gr Gold Dots.

Are you using these at supersonic speeds?

I don’t think there’s is a bullet out there that can not be accurate enough for silhouette shooting. The bigger question is if it will knock them down with a velocity challenged cartridge with a short barrel.

I would change powders and use a 175 SMK.

If you have to stick with H110, either a Berger 155.5 full bore or a Sierra 155 Palma #2156
300 Blackout, not just for sub-sonics.

Thanks, what powder(s) do you suggest with the heavier bullets and how do you feel about 165-168gr match bullets?
