Got a great deal on some Nosler 210gr Reduced Drag Factor blems from Shooter's Pro Shop. Thought they might make a great subsonic plinker now that the 208gr A-max is gone.

Here's the initial test set I shot today (82F 82% humidity sea level)

Rifle: PWS Mk 109
Barrel: 9" 1:8"
Action: Piston; Tubb lightweight AR buffer spring, Carbine buffer
Suppressor: AAC SDN-6
Magazine: Lancer 20-rd / Bravo Co. 300BLK
Brass: GCG, 1.358"
Bullet: 210gr Nosler RDF
Primer: CCI 400
Powder: IMR 4227

LOT 1
Charge: 10.3gr
COAL: 2.26"
CBTO: 1.574"
MV: 1140
SD: 11.0
ES: 19

LOT 2
Charge: 10.0gr
COAL: 2.24"
CBTO: 1.555"
MV: 1094
SD: 10.0
ES: 29

LOT 3
Charge: 9.7gr
COAL: 2.22"
CBTO: 1.535"
MV: 1073
SD: 12.3
ES: 28

LOT 4
Charge: 9.4gr
COAL: 2.20"
CBTO: 1.515"
MV: 1056
SD: 7.6
ES: 23

Intent with the decreasing COAL was to keep case fill constant - all charges were slightly compressed. Due to higher variance of bullet length (0.004" SD length compared to 0.001" SD of the base-to-ogive), I used CBTO to set my seating die. Usually I just go with COAL for ballistic tipped bullets.

With the suppressor, all lots showed 100% cycling with BHO.

Next step: test one more dropdown to 9.1gr to see if reliability holds up.

Nice to get good results the first day out with a new projectile!

Rifle Used
Daniels Defense DDM4ISR (intergral Suppressor)

Barrel Maker, Contour, Gas Length/Port Size (if known)
Pistol Length

Barrel Length and Twist
9", 1:8

Bullet Used (grain, manufacturer, type)
200gr Hornady ELD X

Powder Charge and Brand
Varies, CFE BLK

Case Used
New Hornady

Primer Used
Federal 205M

COAL
2.23

After working with 1690 I was a bit surprised in the extreme spread with CFE BLK, it seemed like 1 out of each string of 5 was ruining the FPS string for SD and ES.

Also, everything performed as it should, no issues with cycling or lock back.

Groups of 5 shots

12-23-19

10.4, 734 SD=10 ES=25
10.7, 786 SD=21 ES=55
11.0, 830 SD=11.2 ES=29
11.3, 891 SD=14.6 ES=34
11.6, 937 SD=4.9 ES=11
11.9, 972 SD=8.8 ES=18 (tightest group at 50 yds)

Next up will be 12.0 through 12.4 in .1 groups of 5

12-26-19

12.0, 944 SD=17.2 ES=38
12.1, 962 SD=15.0 ES=35
12.2, 992 SD=12.2 ES=28
12.3, 998 SD=5.5 ES=13 (tightest group at 50 yds)
12.4, 1015 SD=14.7 ES=34
12.5, 1036 SD=11.4 ES=30

I'm going with 12.3 and calling it done for this load development

Pistol Length

Barrel Length and Twist

Bullet Used (grain, manufacturer, type)
208gr Hornady ELD Match

Powder Charge and Brand
Varies, VV N120

Case Used
New Hornady

Primer Used
Federal 205M

COAL

I expected better from this powder to be honest, it wasn't that clean at all compared to 1680 or CFE BLK, the extreme spreads were not that good either, and the accuracy was poor. Figures as I bought 8lbs of it! I need to load more so we will see where it goes. At least everything performed as it should, no issues with cycling or lock back.

Groups of 5 shots

12-23-19

9.9, 781 SD=35.2 ES=96!!
10.0, 784 SD=11.8 ES=24
10.1, 824 SD=12.4 ES=30 (tightest group at 50 yds)
10.2, 841 SD=8.1 ES=21
10.3, 870 SD=54.6 ES=148!!
10.4, 908 SD=20.8 ES=47

Next up will be 10.5 through 11.2 in .1 groups of 5

12-26-19

10.5, 904 SD=31.8 ES=78
10.6, 942 SD=18.9 ES=51
10.7, 941 SD=15.1 ES=38
10.8, 964 SD=17.1 ES=36
10.9, 964 SD=14.1 ES=31 (tightest group at 50 yds)
11.0, 997 SD=12.8 ES=34

I really want to like this powder but I don't see it competing with 1690. Hell 12 groups of 5 shots and the lowest Extreme Spread is 21! I might as well run it up to 11.4 and see if a node exists. Stay tuned.....

12-31-19

11.0, 980 SD= 9.6 ES=23
11.1, 999 SD=26.5 ES=59
11.2, 1019 SD=11.1 ES=31
11.3, 1020 SD= 8.3 ES=23
11.4, 1039 SD= 8.9 ES=21 (tightest group at 50 yds)
11.5, 1063 SD=10.8 ES=27

Well that's it for this powder..... I tried to make it work but it does not. All the groups are 5 shot groups and a lot of these groups had fairly tight SD and ES for 4 of the 5 but typically at least one shot was crazy on velocity, and the accuracy was shit in general.

Wierd. My N120 loads are much cleaner and more accurate than 1680. I’ve gotten single digit ES/SD with Lapua 200FMJBT and SMK240, moa accuracy on an old 10” Noveske barrel 1/8 twist barrel. N110 was cleaner but not as reliable nor consistent but I’ll try it again this spring with the R700 and heavy subs. I also use Fed 205M primers.
