Most ball powders seem to do better with magnum primers, but really will never know until you try. CFE is low enough pressure where you don’t have to worry about blowing a hole in the cup, so a non magnum primer may be fine.

Then again I’ve been known to use a pistol primer where a standard small rifle primer is called for, so my advice could be questionable.

I loaded up & shot some 150 gr Gold Dots with CFE BLK. I chronoed them with a Magnetospeed attached to a suppressed Mini 14. I used data from the current Hodgen data pamphlet. (remember when the powder companies gave away those pamphlets for free?) I loaded up 10 rds each of 19grs, 19.5 grs, 20 grs, (book max) and 20.5 grs. the chrono was acting up and some of the shot strings registered less than 10 shots.
19 grs CFE BLK
max - 1818
min - 1770
av - 1790
s.d.- 19 9 5 shot string

19.5 grs
max - 1876
min - 1784
av - 1832
s.d.- 31.3 10 shots

20 grs
max - 1910
min - 1832
av - 1871
s.d.- 25.7 9 shots

20.5 grs
max - 1933
min - 1866
av - 1908
s.d.- 26 5 shots

for comparison my normal loading of 17.7 grs of H - 110
max - 2002
min - 1937
av - 1982
s.d.- 26.4 5 shots

I was planning on shooting with a scoped AR 15 to see how they grouped but for some reason the *&^%%^& chrono only wanted to work on the iron sighted Mini 14.

If it was me and I wanted to give CFE a fair chance of working....

Take a fired case, spent primer still intact.
Drop 22 grains slowly down a 6" tube, This should fill the case just below the neck if you have a good drop.
Set a bullet on the powder and measure COL, use this length.
Start with 22.5 grains and work to 23 at that length.
Above 23 grains increase the length of COL .010" for every .10 grain of powder.
Stop when you have pressure signs, or less than about .180" of bullet in the neck or what ever length your comfortable with.

Dellet again brings his experience to the forum. I would add that with that particular bullet/powder combo, a magnum primer should give you better SD. I would try both standard and magnum primers. My drop tube is about 14-16" long, used for this and other applications. The data below is about as far as I got into this, got hung up on a precision rifle and the load work.

150 GD 2.165
23.0 gr CFE BLK
Nosler 1x brass
REM 7.5
LFCD, lite crimp

3 shot AVG 2105 fps
3 shot, .575 at 100 yds
SD was 40 ish
RARR, bipod/rear bag Suppressed

blaster wrote: Fri Nov 29, 2019 8:25 am thanks! looks like it is best for subs with heavier bullets. I was hoping it would be good for the 150 gr. Gold Dots but I will try it with them anyway. maybe my barrels will like it.
Ive been using 4227 and 4198 for 150gr subs with good results in a 10" upper.

I'm going to try this. I just put together a pistol with 10.5" ballistic advantage 1:7 barrel shot through a deadair Nomad. Made some brass from Hornady 223 using Hornady custom grade dies. Loaded CFE-BLK@
19.5gr
20gr
20.5gr
21gr
21.5gr with CCI 450 under Speer 150gr gold dot.
I got close to the COL from the book and what I found here at 2.234. Thought it didn't look right because the bullet barely went half-way down the neck. Best 5 shot groups I got @100yrds were

I know it can be better. I bet if I shrink it down like you said, that will close it up. I know the gun will shoot because I shot a sub MOA group with another powder and bullet of same weight.

I had good results with 265 grain DS Special cast bullets using CFE Blk. Never finished development last winter and I really need to fine tune that load.
