PSA uppper, can't tighten flash hider to where I want it

Post by DoubleJ »

For my entire AR-15 life, I've used two 2x4s in a vice to clamp my barrel and attach or remove a flash hider. It's always worked, no exceptions. I recently got a PSA dissipator upper (and just for the record, they still can't get the FSB on straight, even after two tries) and apparently the barrel is made from pure teflon, as even when I tighten it in my vise to the point that the 2x4s split, it just spins when I put a wrench on the FH, can't get it indexed (the word is indexed, not timed. You time a car, you index a muzzle device. INDEX.) Crush washer is good, greased, just like all the rest.

What other tricks out there that I haven't tried?

Considering you can go more than 360 degrees on a crush washer from when the flash hider makes contact I'm not really sure what the problem is.

Is it possible that the barrel threading is deeper than the flash hider threading throwing things off?

As TMD has stated, crush washers can get more than a complete turn.

And if that doesn't suit you, try the old fashioned way.

Agreed, I've crushed crush washers flat in the past getting them to where I want them. I much prefer peel washers, but I don't have any laying around. Is the FH bottoming out? Maybe, hadn't considered that possibility, thank you for that idea. Like I said, this isn't my first, or fifth, or tenth muzzle device install on an AR platform. The problem is that the barrel is almost polished to a high sheen for some reason, and slippery as snot, so I need some ideas to gain some traction.

That's pretty slick, probably what I'll have to try next.

Have you tried putting rosin on the 2x4's?

Either rosin as suggested, or a piece of inner tube rubber might help.

....my preferred tool for barrel installs and any muzzle device work, although the price has doubled at Brownells for some reason

....here's another source at a lower price...

...also, Magpul BEV blocks have dropped in pricing to be competitive with the rod varieties...

Tried inner tube, the stinkin barrel is so slippery that I can turn it by hand with a section of bicycle inner tube on there. Is rosin that stuff for bowling?
