new NOE design

Post by excess650 »

I THOUGHT this bullet would be perfect for my 7.62x40. With gas check and PC, they are right at 170gr. They are looking better for the 300BO, and will make their way into 308/7.62x51 loads as well.

The line drawing shows .308" spec in wheel weights, but mine drops .309-.3095. GCs were seated in a Lee .309" push through, PC'd via "shake-n-bake", and then run through the .309" sizer again. Bullets were cast air cooled and air cooled again after PC.

The Lee "155" and "160" pointed bullets weigh 160gr and 170gr respectively from my moulds, with GC and lube. The fat ogives on both of the Lee bulets were intended for 7.62x39, so "fat 30s" to begin with, and adding powder coat only makes this worse. I've shot both of these quite a bit from 300BOs and seemed to be limited to ~2.04" OAL.

This NOE bullet loaded to 2.26" in the x40 puts the gas check at the base of the neck. In the 300BO, I've loaded all the way out to 2.200" and that puts the GC in the middle of the neck, and tried in 3 different chambers. First thrown together loads were shot at 50 yards, 17gr IMR 4227 in FC cases, RP 7-1/2 primers and loaded to 2.170", 2.185" and 2.200". Shots 2-5 were a ragged hole with the first shot almost touching (2.170" OAL). Longer OAL didn't group as well, but this was the first time out. 18gr IMR 4227 loaded to 2.185" looked to be on the warm side from 16" 8 twist Olympic Arms shot that day.

Just for S&Gs, I bought a Duramag 350L magazine for the 7.62x40 It allows 2.30" OAL, and this bullet was loaded to that length in reformed WW cases, F205 primers, and 21-24gr surplus AA2200 (old stuff). Pmag 7.62x35 mags allowed 2.26" OAL, and 20-23gr charges were loaded into the same batch of cases with the same primers. Shot with just a front rest at 50 yards, windy and cold, best groups were ragged hole, and most had at least 3 touching. Primers look fine, and I think I can get another grain in the reformed cases, and I suspect another grain in fireformed cases.

I've got a 169gr GC slick sided mold used for my AR10, should work ok in the BO, about 1800 fps with 1680 or 4227.
