AAC 308 18 inch barrel with 1-8 twist.
Alright I know it's not 300 blk but I couldn't resist an AAC barrel for my 308 at $149. I have an SPS tactical that's 1-12 twist and figured I could use this barrel with some Lehigh defense 194 gr expanding subs, as well as my regular supersonics for deer hunting. Anyone have any expirence with this barrel?

Yes. I got the first one (heavy profile) Oct. 2010. This is a great, MOA, black nitride barrel with a fast twist for longer/subsonic bullets. This is a great deal at $149 (medium profile).

Do you mind telling me what weight bullets your shooting? I have some subsonic bullets ready to go but not sure what the lowest supersonic bullet it will handle.700PSS wrote:Yes. 168 gr SMK's and 185 gr Cor-Bon subs, so far. I wouldn't worry too much about anything being too light, as long as you're using normal weight range bullets of normal construction, but test first to be safe, if shooting suppressed. (Your Barnes 150 TTSX's should be fine.)firedavis wrote:Do you mind telling me what weight bullets your shooting? This barrel was mostly created for supersonic use. The fact that it is subsonic compatible is a bonus, but with 300 BLK out, I was not trying to make a subsonic 308 barrel.
If you are at 125 or over, then there is zero concern.
There is no problem with supersonic bullets, except maybe certain thin jacket 110 grain.
1/7 or 1/8 is actually my preferred twist for supersonic 308 because the extra rotation helps expanding bullets open up on impact. The research on this is not well known.
I know the former head of a govt ballistics lab that uses 1/8 twist 308 as his preference for supersonic. In fact, that is why I came out with it.

Yes, this would have been my only concern. I'm thinking of the 110 gr Hornady V-MAX, for example, although I'm not sure if it is really thin-jacketed. I would assume so, since it IS a varmint bullet.300Blk wrote:There is no problem with supersonic bullets, except maybe certain thin jacket 110 grain.
BTW Robert: Did you ever do anything with that custom 1:4 twist .308 barrel you ordered?

Got the barrel today and for $150 can't beat it. Really can't beat that it came with a 51-tooth flash hider on it instead of a thread protector.
Thanks for the bullet info Robert.

Re: AAC 308 18 inch barrel with 1-8 twist.
I used to know at what rpm a 110-VMAX would blow up, but now I forget. But looking at my old emails, I think nothing could blow up in a 1:8 twist. It took a 1:4 twist to blow up some fragile bullets.
So yeah - 1:8 is not even "fast" twist. The guy at the govt lab that did research on this decided that 1:6 twist was what he would call fast for a 308.
