Suppressor finish is now gone

Post by Jjhammer »

15 minutes in a ultrasonic cleaner and finish is now off. Any suggestions on a replacement finish?

Krylon high temp flat black spray paint. The kind sold for BBQ grills. Cheap and simple. You will be done in 15 minutes. Mask threads, Three light coats and let dry for a day.

I just ground the points off a Tromix Saiga shark style brake. Finished it like above.

I have been using chalkboard paint for a few years now. It is very durable and I guess it needs to be to stand up to chalk. It goes on goos and dries to a semi gloss look that most cans and guns have. I have used it for dozens of guns as well as my own suppressor and it works.

I would paint it then stick it in the oven. I normally turn the oven on at 350 degrees. I let it get up to temperature then turn it off when I put the item in. After a few hours the paint is very durable.

You can find it at Walmart for about $6 a can. A can will do several long guns.

BTW, it stands up to heat very well.

Is that common for an ultrasonic cleaner to strip off finishes?????

Depends on the finish. They can also work harden aluminum from what I have read. And that can cause cracks.

Unless you are shooting cast bullets or unless this is a 22 suppressor there is no need to clean it.

I have not tried this finish yet, just fixing up an order, but understand it is hard as woodpecker lips, Cerakote now makes an air dry, no bake, finish. Brownell's sells it in various colors including Graphite Black.

Thanks for the ideas. I tried stove paint and it looks nice, ill see about durability. The cerakote sounds cool.

I believe they also make a high temp version which would likely hold up better. I believe it is oven cure though...don't quote me on it.
