Speer Gold Dot 150 grain Blackout Specific Bullet Now Available

Post by chipdog4 »

Saw some Gold Dot rifle bullets over the weekend and picked some up in .224 caliber and found this .308 150 grain on their website. Would have liked to seen a lighter weight like the 123 grain .310 they just released.

That bullet actually should be very promising, if it is indeed designed for the cartridge. It will have a trajectory very similar to a 125 SST @2300 fps based on a velocity of 2100 fps and hit with 100 pounds more energy at 200 yards.

At 300 yards both bullets will be about 1600 fps, the 150 will have 3" more drop, 25" vs 22" but have 850 pounds energy compared to 700. Based on a 100 yard zero in a 16" barrel.

In many ways this would be one of the best hunting bullet designs for the cartridge. Inside 300 yards a boat tail is not needed and only robs much needed case capacity. Careful hand loads will get near equal drops with a 125 grain bullet and have 10% more energy on target.

Part of that will depend on actual BC of the Speer bullet VS advertised.

One would think it might be close to ballistics for the myriad of 147 and 150 grain loads that are available for cheap practice loads.

I am a great fan of the Gold Dot pistol bullets; haven’t carried anythingbut them for 15 years. Hopefully these work out, and become available in factory ammo.

I did see that load data as well. Smart move releasing it before the bullet.
There's also some other very interesting data in there for the Gold Dot rifle bullets (75 grain .224 and some 6.8 bullets)

that looks like a promising bullet for the 300 BLK. I'm gonna have to try some. my Mini 14 really likes 150 gr. bullets.

A bullet I can burn up some Lil Gun with. Wonder how far away I will need to be to insure that I don't burn the hide on a buck.
