Admin help.......The "bots" are taking over!!

Post by Sig220 » Wed Dec 26, 2018 11:15 am

When checking for new topics, the bots have the first page covered in useless posts.

It would add to the work load, but just about eliminate these if membership apps were approved individually.

Thanks for all the hard work ya'll do!

I've started posting their ISP's and email addresses they used when registering on another forum, you know, just in case they want to start spamming other spammers

I know, I know. I am forwarded as much as fast as I can to the owner. He has to do the banning of the spammers.

In the meantime I am trying to lock or delete threads as I can. Unfortunately I have a day job, and it is a pain to delete and lock threads on my phone. So I have to wait till I get to a computer. :x

Drone strike, tactical nuke strike, Delta, SEALs, Ranger Battalion, SWAT teams and anything else could be used to include the stinking Girl Scouts, as long as it makes the lives of these spammers miserable and short lived.

I never knew there was such a demand for pre-written term papers.

Sure wish they had that back when I was in school. Hahahahaha

Why not install a captcha? I ran a board with phpBB and had one which eliminated most of them. It's real simple, one just asks a question such as: Fill in the Blank: 277 ____ . Acceptable answers Wolverine, wolverine WLV, wlv, Wlv. The question/answer(s) are customizable so it could be anything. Bots can't read, so no answer, no account. Sure helps mods out a bunch.

That's what we did on a board I use to run.

It worked well but after time they would figure out the right answers and I'd have to change them up a bit.

Maybe closest member to the spammer gets to pay them a "visit".

Yea, but it requires human intervention, taking their time, and it takes awhile for them to figure it out. That gives the mods plenty of time off from deleting posts and banning accounts, which is actually a useless endeavor because they seldom use them again. And most times they spoof/change the ip addresses, so thats not very effective either.

What we ended up doing that worked the best was making first time posters needing permission to post their first 3 or 5 post.

It would take a lot of time some days to check the post of new members, I'd end up deleting dozens of "new accounts" daily but it keep the board clean. At that time most the IP's were coming out of Russia or the Ukraine.
