There's no helping some people

Post by Jim Timber »

I'm not sure I could handle doing gun sales. I'm involved in a firearms group on facebook and this guy posted up asking for advice on what to get for his buddy's AR for $1K budget. He's bought all the other crap, and left the barrel for last. Has a $100 brake, $100 charging handle, $200 free float tube, and he seems to think spending over $200 for a good barrel of known quality is too much. Then he criticizes me for insisting he spends another $75 for a known quality barrel and seems to think I'm a kook because I say "Barrel, optics, trigger, in that order = precision".

Just sitting here shaking my head.

It's an epidemic. Just think of how many similar people to that guy ARE doing gun sales and in a position where they "educate" everyone with their superior knowledge and flawless opinions lol

I have felt your pain. When I worked at the gun store between LE careers we'd get folks who would buy an expensive rifle and then skimp on optics. Face it, a 2k rifle wiill be a disappointment when you put an 80 dollar scope on it.

Life is too short to buy cheap barrels, triggers and optics.

There's stuff you can do to make a cheap trigger shoot, but if the bore axis is wonky, there's nothing you can do to fix a "one distance" gun, or one that moves it's point of impact between every shot based on how warm the thing is. The barrel is the heart of the rifle. Then you need to see what you're shooting, then you need to be able to get the hammer to fall without screwing up your aim. But I'm a prick because I called him out on his ass-backwards methodology and insulted his build when he ran out of money and started looking for suggestions for <$200 tubes. I even told him that the other stuff could be added later if desired, because a $15 charging handle works (they do, I've used them on oodles of guns  ).

It'll look pretty in the guys safe. :|

I've built a bunch of "budget" rifles. They all start with a good barrel. Not "match grade", but something that'll hold MOA with the right ammo isn't difficult to source at that price point.

I didn't ask, but I bet he dropped $250 on a SSA or something. He wouldn't post the parts list when I started throwing dollar amounts around and asking where the other $400 went in the breakdown?

I was honestly just trying to get the guy into a good tube. No good deed goes unpunished.

When I started my 300blk build, first thing I picked out was my novesky barrel. Granted I probably could have spent less, but I have no regrets. My buddy then wanted to build a 300 as well and he started off with sone cheap ass barrel. Luckily hes not like the guy in this post, I told him pretty much what Jim said annnnnd he got a rainer match barrel.

Exactly! Answers to questions I have never seen the need to ask!

I've had the hammer pin walk out before, so I can see the prophylactic use of the KNS pins (and I like the look). JP's screw retained pins are every bit as effective for the purpose, and a bit cheaper.

BAD lever on the other hand - well, I have two ambi lowers for that. Not necessary at all (was well trained to use the palm slap like many of us were), but adds to resale value none the less.

KUDOs for trying!!

I am on some as well.. I TRY to just read. Most or many at lest cannot see forest from trees ad in a sprinkling of arm chair commandos and its very hard to "help"... PLUS all the idiots that answer the OPs question even tho 100 guys before them already revealed the correct answer cracks me up!

I was reading one ass hat was regurgitating the fact that the guys safety was off when the pic was taken... It was COMICAL! the guy told him it was a hot firing line, gun was broke.. gun cannot have safety on when not cocked.. yada yada yada but this ass hat had "lived with a gun 2 years" and KNEW what his DI told him about safety... It was comical... finally the other guy got it across and he conceded other guy was right. But only after some ten pluss back and fourth comments.

EVERY TIME I have commented, I end up turning off the thread cause cannot believe the commentary.

Our armorers always dropped the hammer as soon as they chamber checked it, just prior to putting it on the rack. Can't put safety on with hammer up. I've been doing the same thing for 16 years now. If my safety's off, it's been cleared.

Youtube comments are just as bad... "You're sweeping the camera a-hole!" and it's totally obvious it's a selfie stick. Then you've got guys with chamber flags and all that. What have gun people come to?
