I have a S&W m&p 15 optics ready, so it has the level gas block on the front. I just ordered a DS Arms 300BLK upper that has an A2 front sight gas block. Even though the calibers are different, will switching the gas blocks so the front sight can be on my m&p be possible? Or are the gas ports different sizes?

Should be the same, I guess it really depends on the barrel profile. Someone else may have a more educated response though.

From experience: when I took the gas block off my my M&P OR it was not easy. The tapered pin is reversed on M&P's for some reason. I damaged the stock gas block pretty bad, so you might want to pony up the $30-$50 for a new one instead of trying to swap them out. I know CMMG makes one that is level with the front rail.

Also, don't you still want to shoot the 5.56? Or are you doing a direct swap with the A2 gas block?

You cannot expect the pin holes in the front sight to match up to any barrel but the one it came off of.

The front sight is installed on the barrel, held square in a jig, then drilled for the taper pin. The barrel and front sight are then an assembly, and the front sight is not designed to be used on another barrel.

I forgot about that. I was thinking of clamp on gas blocks for some reason. :|

If you want to replace the gas block, you can do so with a clamp on style gas block. Swapping them wouldn't be an option in this case as -k- as pointed out.

Okay thank you, I will order a new A2 front sight clamp gas block.

I will need to remove the optics ready gas block any way so that I can install a YHM free float diamond rail. Is it possible to do so without removing original O.R. gas block?

Unfortunately not, the rail won't fit over the M&P OR gas block.
