As they say in Hollywood, "Good shootin' Tex!".

Re: 300 Wilson Ham’r
I waited to get into the 300 Black, and now, here comes the HAMR. Must be that Black Rifle Disease I suffer from, to even be interested in the HAMR. Ar-15 in 223, 300 Blk, and an AR-10 in 308 should be enough. Just love those Black Rifles.wildfowler wrote: ↑Sat Dec 14, 2019 9:06 pmI want them to go ahead and start making 30BR factory brass. Just think what doors that might open......rebel wrote: ↑Fri Dec 13, 2019 9:30 pmI know you were I just want folks to recognize that there is nothing new under the sun when it comes to cartridge design - to include the millennial operators favorite, 6.5 CM. The hamr, when loaded to 2.26 just barely bridges the gap between 300 BLK and something over 30/30. Nothing new under the sun, just way cooler names.wildfowler wrote: ↑Fri Dec 13, 2019 4:21 pm
Well yeah, there’s that. I just assumed we were talking about AR15.
Re: 300 Wilson Ham’r
I am considering getting into 300ham'r and having hard time deciding on barrel length/profile.
It would be nice to collect some data to be able to calculate velocity loss per inch.
Any input will help.
@djones
Which barrel length/profile do you have?

Re: 300 Wilson Ham’r
I've found some information regarding 300ham'r barrel length vs velocity (Posted by Bill Wilson).
Seems like velocity loss per inch is comparable to 300blk (under 20fps per inch).
Also I did some comparisons for 16" barrel with simulated data from GRT (https://grtools.de/) and there is a consistant 300fps advantage for 300ham'r.

Re: 300 Wilson Ham’r
i'm shooting an 18" barrel. i think most of my buds' hamrs are 16. real world... prolly doesn't matter that much.

Re: 300 Wilson Ham’r
sounds strange i know, but i don't know what profile i'm shooting, lol. this is from a discussion wilson had with someone on barrels on thf..
Sage: I was leaning towards the LE profile. The reason for the heavier barrel choice was recoil management, as I don't intend to use a muzzle brake. Hunting the heavy brush in the Appalachian mountains and I don't want twigs or other debris to get caught up in a brake or flash hider. But that's no reason to go crazy heavy. I'll keep watching the website closely. A new 300 HAMR is soon to be assembled. BTW I'm really liking the 135 grain bonded bullets. A great all around load!
Wilson: Sage, as a FYI our 5 best selling barrels listed in order are:
18" Tac Hunter fluted/threaded
16" Ranger round/threaded
11.3" SBR round/fluted
18" BW Ranch round/threaded
18" Tac Hunter round/threaded

Re: 300 Wilson Ham’r
@djones
Thanks for the information.
At the moment I am leaning toward 16" Ranger since it's the lightest (26Oz) and only ~20fps "slower" than the "standard" for the caliber 18".
BTW,
I am a bit confused regarding 300ham'r brass forming from 223
Some people mention specialized/intermediate mandrels to neck-up the cartridge before the sizing.
On other, hand some people claim they just trim the case to ~1.6", size it in (Lee Full Size Die) and than do the final trim.
II would be very helpful if someone could share their experience.

Re: 300 Wilson Ham’r
i gave the 223 brass a try, and i'd still use it as a last resort if i had to, but here's my experience...
trim cases with giraud trimmer – that works great
chamfered the mouth of course
light lube on case although i don't think the 223 body touched the die wall.
dipped mouth in motor oil
sized with lee hamr die
works fine until you crumple a case or rip a neck off... inside the die... with the expander still in it.
i destroyed a couple decapping stems hammering them out. they are secured with a slotted locking bolt that applies pressure to the sides, so they slip too. for lack of a better description... total crap. maybe i just don't know how to use it properly.
had to get replacement mandrels from squirrel daddy. better taper. scored the stem sides for better traction but they still slip. i just couldn't tighten the bolt hard enough to get a good grip on it. junked it for the rcbs. for those of you laughing and wondering how i could be such an idiot, i'll tell you... yea – i'm THAT guy!
after i broke off a few more necks, i abandoned the whole idea of converting 223 brass.
to be fair, a buddy annealed his brass and claimed very few failures. most of my 'advisors' suggested i go through a couple of calibers instead of jumping straight to 30 cal. that may all be good advice but it's waaay more time than i want to put into loading. new hamr brass isn't that expensive.
correction... i sized first and then trimmed with the giraud blkout/hamr pilot

Re: 300 Wilson Ham’r
watched these hogs come in across a wheat field last night and tried to intercept them. i was sneaking down the dirt road but was in a low spot when they came out right in front of me. the closest one saw me and was about to blow out of there. he would have taken the whole herd with him, so i had to shoot before i was ready. didn't even get the scope nuced. got a few but i was too low to see the herd a few seconds after they charged back in to the wheat.
