7.62x39 SBR?

Post by Sharkbite »

Anybody have any experience with 10.5” 7.62x39 ballistics?

A buddy is contemplating a SBR Mini 14 build. Would a SBR Mini 30 be practical?

I briefly owned an AR upper with a 10.5'' Faxon barrel chambered in 7.62x39... I remember it shooting my hottest 123gr handloads w/ A1680 around 2200fps. This same ammo (27.2gr A1680 under a 123gr .310 SST) runs right at 2500fps in my 16.5'' bolt gun. Most factory ammo I put through the 10.5'' upper was between 2100-2150fps.

It would be doable . If that is what he wants , go for it . I was going to build a SBR M1 carbine , but went with an AR lower instead . I'm glad I did in that I've acquired SBR uppers in .22LR , 223 , 300 B/O and 458 Socom so far . Much more versatile .

7.62x39 in fine down to a 10-inch barrel. I would not go shorter though. A little blasty but you do get cheap ammo and .30cal. I had a 10inch ak pistol for a wile. It shot just like a normal ak. SBR's really do need a suppressor or blast diverter though.

I built an SBR AK in 7.62x39 with a 12.5" barrel and it works fine. Used an AMD-65 kit with its shorter than standard gas system, and a standard length AK barrel from akbuilder.com that I had shortened and lathe threaded 1/2-28. Plenty of AKs have shorter barrels than that, and the cartridge is similar to blk in that it works well in short barrels.

I would personally not bother trying to SBR a Ruger mini given that it's probably easier to build an AK and you might even get better accuracy. You can buy something like a Draco pistol and then pretty easily add the stock when your Form 1 comes back.
