Back when I was able to pass the FAA medical to be an aviator, I kept up with a column called "I learned about flying from that". It was a confessional type thing where pilots fessed up to their mistakes to benefit the pilot community.
This is kind of a "I learned about shooting from that" type post.
I kept all my pistol rounds in a neat, smaller to larger caliber row on multiple shelves. After I bought an HK 45 ACP, I loaded a mag. I didn't have my glasses on when loading the mag and loaded 40 S&W into the magazine, went out to shoot it for the first time. They loaded in the mag as normal, I racked the slide as normal, and I shot against by backstop of multiple layers of leftover plywood. The round fired OK, just didn't make the same noise nor cycled the slide. After the first shot, I figured out what went wrong. The bullet buried in the plywood, no keyhole.
I now stagger my ammo putting the 40s and the 45s on a different shelf.
See attached photo.

It's a little tougher to tell by looking at the brass when you do that with a .357 Sig loaded into a .40 S&W.
The effect on target is about the same tho

Nope. I have a piece of brass from a 9mm/.40 wildcat that looks similar.cwlongshot wrote: you are not alone.

Don't feel too bad. I did the whole .40 in a .45 1911 once. Thank goodness the gun just shoved the round down and out the barrel. I now keep my 45 and 40 separate as well. You never think anyone could possibility be that stupid. Right up until it happens to you! Respect "Murphy" and his law.
