New SBR stock (PDW style) made by JP customs and Maxim Defense

Post by nkresho »

Good evening fellow 300blk shooters.

I was in the market for a new stock for my recently approved form 1 SBR.

Candidates were the Troy PDW and MVB arc. Neither were exactly what I wanted, as the JP customs captured spring was another item I decided I was going to get. Since they both used shorter buffer tubes, the JP wasn't going to fit.

I was able to justify the price, as the JP spring is about $130 by itself, and the other stocks are in the $400 range. This one I picked up at Black Rain Ordinance for $450 shipped. And I got a free single-point sling with it.

Overall I am pretty happy with my purchase. Two things were just a little bit unexpected.

1. The stock was supposed to be the same length (when fully extended) as the collapsible carbine stock. It ended up being a little bit shorter. Not much, but just under an inch.
2. The castle nut is permanently attached to the buffer tube. This isn't a huge deal, but I was not able to use either of my castle nut wrenches to torque it down. Pics show it below.

On to the pics.

Weight comparisons 1192g (Maxim) vs 985 gr (Magpul MOE) (adds 207 grams) both included the buffer and spring:

Haven't had it to the range yet, but I will report back and add to this thread.

I can say the length difference between the magpul and this one is a non-issue. I never ran the magpul fully extended, usually one to two notches shy. This one is 100% comfortable either fully extended or one notch in as well.

Hopefully the tube doesn't come loose while shooting it. I'll keep an eye on it when I am out. If I have to, I may grab a strap wrench and give it a nudge.

Hope this helps y'all decide if you're in the market.

Well that JP captured spring looks oddly familiar to something I run in my 300blk.....

good to know I can probably shorten up the delrin buffer without issue.

What length barrel are you running? And from who?

Let us know how it runs.

It's a palmetto melonite 8.5", 1:7. It came as a preassembled upper with the hand guard. They had it on special around Christmas.

I ran it with the magpul stock, this past weekend. Head my omega on it too. Ran great then. Looking forward to getting it out in this form.

Another board member did this as well, its where I got the idea. Im still trying to get it to run right. If you dont mind could I ask you to measure the diameter of the wire they used for the spring?
