There has been quite a bit of discussion regarding the choice of hunting bullet for use in 300 BLK.
I thought that I would take a couple minutes and compile a rough list of common 300 BLK hunting projectiles and provide some insight.
Here is the list in alphabetic order, with thier G1 BC, rought MV, Terminal Threshold Velocity, and max range for terminal effect:

***NOTE***
This list is updated as I get additional data.
MAX ranges are rounded and are not exact.
The list is intended to be a quick reference when considering a projectile for hunting.
Velocity differnces in an individual's platform will make a significant difference in Max Range.
You should run the balistics using the velocity that your platform delivers and find out the range in which the velocity drops to the Terminal Threshold to determine true max range.
If anyone has additional information they would like me to add, please comment and I will update this post with that data.

Re: Max Effective Range of Common 300 BLK Projectiles
Great lesson in external ballistics there... those lightning-fast 78/110 grainers lose all their effect by 300 yards, but the stodgy 194gr Lehigh ME torsoises starting at 1050fps can kill you out past 1000 yards... assuming you can dial/hold a 270 MOA high correction!
Re: Max Effective Range of Common 300 BLK Projectiles
This is where people are kind of missing the boat on the capabilities of the cartridge. There are a fair amount of hunting bullets in the 150 grain class, but very few that expand at less than 1800 fps. This limits them to about 150-175 yards. If someone were to develop a hunting round that was reliable down to 1600 fps you could almost double that distance.BoomerVF14 wrote:Great lesson in external ballistics there... those lightning-fast 78/110 grainers lose all their effect by 300 yards, but the stodgy 194gr Lehigh ME torsoises starting at 1050fps can kill you out past 1000 yards... assuming you can dial/hold a 270 MOA high correction!
With something like Berger's hunting VLD and the right zero on your scope you would only have about a 5" window of trajectory out to 200 yards, still clocking about 1700fps
300 Blackout, not just for sub-sonics.
Re: Max Effective Range of Common 300 BLK Projectiles
Thanks Dr Phil...nice compilation of data.
Re: Max Effective Range of Common 300 BLK Projectiles
How reliable/what is the source of the terminal velocity listed in your table?
Not that I don't believe the data, but this is the internet

Re: Max Effective Range of Common 300 BLK Projectiles
I believe you have the MAX reversed on these two. The BT should have a longer max range. The Hornady online calculator shows the BT to be traveling 1841fps @ 125 and 1792 fps @ 150.Dr.Phil wrote:- Nosler 110 Varmageddon

Great post Dr Phil.
Re: Max Effective Range of Common 300 BLK Projectiles
Great idea, maybe we can get Gary to do sticky on this.
Barnes 120 black tip data. I spoke with them a while ago and was told it has the same expansion threshold as the 110. Probably good for the same distance or a few yards farther.

i wouldnt want gary to 'do sticky' on this, or any post for that matter! TMI!dellet wrote:Great idea, maybe we can get Gary to do sticky on this.
however if he wanted to change this threads settings to that of a Sticky topic i'd be all for that

I guess we should expect a comment like that from a guy who spends 24/7 trying to "plant.one" anytime, anywhere, with anyone or anything, for any reason.plant.one wrote:i wouldnt want gary to 'do sticky' on this, or any post for that matter!
