Deer Hunting

Post by pvanwagner »

What weight bullets and velocities are the deer hunters on this forum looking for from their 300AAC rounds?

I purchased my 300AAC upper so I could make Major Power Factor for 3 gun shoots, but would like to use it for deer hunting too. I have a Model 1 Sales 16" upper and with a 168gr Sierra MatchKing I am getting 321,000 to 325,000 Power factor with 20.1gr of A1680 with a factory crimp and OAL 2.245. I have a couple of hundred 168gr Nosler BT bullets that I'm thinking about loading some up for the 300AAC, but considering going with my 125gr Nosler BT bullets for deer hunting. I like the idea of just one zero for my scope though.

I of course could stick to my 30.06 for deer hunting, but taking a Black Rifle hunting appeals to me.

Anybody have any thoughts on this?

You'd probably be better off shooting one of the 110gr bullets.

I'm going to take my 300blk over hunting in a couple of weeks, probably use it more for shooting coyotes and stick with my 6.8spc to deer hunt with.

I am looking at two different loads
From ,The Hornady handbook, ( for 300 whisper)

#3010 SP 110 grain, Max load with H 110 is 2150 fps using 20.4 gr. COL 2.050"
they also have a 130 grain #3020 SP, max load with H110 is 2000 fps using 18.5gr, but the COL is listed at 2.100"

they also have some info for 150 grain pushing about 1700-1800 fps with a COL of 2.220"

You would need to play with these to get the the right length to feed out of the AR mags. ( i dont remember what that length is of the top of my head)

And remember these are loads listed for the 300 Whisper! so you would need to do some work to get them right

Also, these numbers are for a 10" Contender pistol so a 16" barrel will add some velocity on.

That makes more sense.

Should be able to get 2,400-2,450fps easy with a 110gr bullet and 16" barrel.

I started out building a 300-221 on an AR for my daughter. As it turned out she is not going to be a deer hunter, but she still comes with me in the blind. I had taken her to a blind when she did not want to shoot I decided to try the rifle out. That was about five years years ago and it became my favorite deer gun. It has killed many deer and pigs in that time, even dropped a 200 lb axis buck in its tracks. My rifle could only get 2000 fps with a 125 Nosler BT (18 gr H110 max load), and I think most rifles will do a lot better than that. Of course, shot placement is all important, but it is easy with a rifle that does not kick, and the round is plenty accurate. I also pick my shots, no running shots, nothing over 100 yards, etc.

I've killed a mess of deer shooting 18.5 gr H110 and 125 Nosler ballistic tips. Mine run at 2250 fps out a 26 inch SSK barrel. (300 Whisper) Ususually results in a pass thru on chest shots with lots of nasty damage inside. I have had one buck lung shot run 100 yards or so before he bled out. Most barely 40 if they make it that far. Heart shots = two steps and we all know what happens with head shots.

After measuring the Nosler BT 168gr and comparing to the Sierra Match 168gr I realized the Noslers are .018" longer. The idea was to try and use the same load for both rounds, but that's obviously not going to work so I'll use those 168gr Noslers with my 30.06.

Since everyone is saying 125gr Nosler BTs and I have some I use for Reduced Recoil load with the 30.06, I have worked up some with A1680 using the load data from Western Powders. Their minimum and maximum are 19.4 to 21.5gr. I have a few of each at .5gr spreads and will go chrono them and see how they do in my upper. Rifle season starts here in Georgia in a week and a half so I need to get my load set and get my scope dialed in. Otherwise I'm sticking to my 30.06 for opening day.

Also the 168gr would barely be moving fast enough for minimum expansion according to Noslers recommendations. I should be able to get the 125gr Noslers going a lot faster.

I'm really enjoying my 300AAC upper. The 168gr Sierra MK are making Major Factor for HM 3gun and the 125gr should make good deer rounds and great home defense rounds.

Thanks for all the input everyone.

Since it makes sense to use 300AAC data when loading for 300AAC here is the data from Western Powders. I probably found it somewhere else on this forum (or more likely from SilencerTalk before the conversion), but here's another copy since some on this discussion topic are referencing pistol data.

What is your load for the 168MK? I'd like to give some major PF loads a whirl.
