2019 hunting ammo

Post by Grouse870 »

So I’m hoping to get my 300 out for for this years hunting season after my cycling issues I had last year. 16” pistol gas. So I’m planning on picking up some ammo. So the 110/120 tsx and 125 sst are well established (can’t seem to find any sst is stock and I don’t reload) how are the 150 fusions? Hornady American gunner 125 hp? Hornady 110 gmx? Federal 120 copper? I tried looking at the bullet sticky and didn’t see anything on these rounds. Are they just too new or did I miss it. I just want a deer round for 200 yards and in. I want to buy a few boxes and shoot out to distance. I want to really get this 300 dialed in before the season starts and figured I should start now.

If you don't reload stick with barnes or the 110 Vmax load.
I would learn to reload.

I agree with rebel . barnes 110 grain , hornady 110 grain v-max and I will add nosler 110 grain varmageddon . I have killed deer with all three .

I've had good results with 125gr Nosler Ballistic Tips (green) along with the above brands mentioned.

I reached out to federal about their copper bullet. It’s their bullet and has a minimum expansion of 1800 FPS which should put it right at 200 yards. Just FYI

the noslers work well as long as your gun likes them driven pretty hard.

that projectile has a min expansion of 1800 FPS , which at a MV of 2100 FPS barely gets you to the 125 yd mark. its not likely you're going to get *ANY* expansion from 150 out, and even at 125 you're probably only going to get minimal expansion.

Its designed to hold together at 308 velocity's... so its relatively tough. the closer you get to that min terminal velocity, the less the bullet is going to expand. Just things to consider.

fantastic thread to reference for terminal threshold info regarding common 30 cal projectiles and their potential suitibility for use in our 300 blk's

if its 1800 fPs min expansion - thats going to barely make that a 100 yd load, unless of course some of the data i can find on it is wrong - theres almost no info out there about this stuff, not even on federal's website. for it to be a 200 yd load as mentioned, the min expansion threshold would have to be down around 1400

mv/bc from midway
mv: 2100 fps
g1 bc: 0.251

according to hornady's balistic calc..

even if that BC is a typo and its supposed to be .351... that still only gets it to about 125 yds and still stay above 1800. now if we have a .351 bc @ 1400 min expansion... that would make it a 300 yd load and then we got something to really get excited about - that would put its performance just about on par with the barnes blacktips.

but until we can clarify that data, the numbers just dont add up

I’ve found 2100 FPS. The 120 tsx starts at 2150 and is 1780 or so at 200 yards according to Barnes data. So I was extrapolating from other 120 grain bullets. Testing is needed but these are significantly cheaper than the Barnes too

Minimum expansion does not mean optimum expansion. When hunting you need the latter.

I don't want to pick on you or look stupid for doing it and I am hoping that there is a bullet i'm not aware of , but..................

The only 120 TSX bullets I can find are either for a 6.5 or 7MM. They would have the range at low velocity like you posted.

Barnes data for their 120 grain has a velocity of 1730 at 200 yards, that holds pretty close to normal velocity loss for a 120-125 grain bullet.
300 Blackout, not just for sub-sonics.
