I agree and this can be a concern. But is not as much a problem with a FFP scope.

I have a 6x18x40 Burris scope that I have had for years and like very much. Its about 20 years old, before allot of the current different reticule craze. So the darn reticule is so thick for such a "higher" powered scope.

I have been a Leupold person for a very long time. I know that they are high dollar and beyond the budget of many shooters. But you can buy used. Esp with a company like Leupold with a warranty on the LIFETIME of the PRODUCT. Used will drop the costs to a level within your expressed budget.

Case in point, I want a new scope for a rifle myself. I just bought a VXIII 4.5x14x40 online for about 350$. Now its likely gonna show wear and the warrenty does not cover this just functionality.
