STD's go into mass production

Post by Jim Timber »

Simple Threaded Devices has been born. It's now a company which will be devoted to muzzle devices and eventually move into sound suppressors.

The original STD was chronicled in a thread in the AR section here. Development has come through a couple revisions in the manufacturing process and is now in full production at my shop in Minnesota. It is, and always will be - 100% US Made.

This is the .223 version:

I haven't started running the .30 cal's yet, but I do have parts on hand to make them.

I'm looking at converting set up's over to running .30 cal's in the next week or so.

Website is still in progress, but might be seen  at SimpleThreadedDevices.com (we're just getting things ported over to the hosting service tonight so it could be a couple days before there's really anything worth looking at there).

I'm going to get some video of the mill running them in the next couple days. It's pretty slow since I don't have an enclosure (no high pressure coolant), but they come out perfect every time. 8)

I also have a distributor for these who takes credit cards. PM me if you want one.

I want to thank all of you who've helped make this happen.

Anyone who's gotten STD's from me can feel free to post pics and comments here as well.

Yeah, the web hosting outfit is choked up tonight so it's not going well and he said he might hold off and work on it later. I've got my dad working on that end of things. He's a web designer now that he's retired from being a main frame/systems programmer.

Retail is set at $50 for bright (as machined) stainless. Satin (bead blasted) will be coming soon which will likely be another $10 (I need to see what time/expense that adds to processing before determining that). I'm trying to get someone lined up to do blackening, but due to the alloy, these require some really nasty caustic solutions. I am working with a local vendor who distributes the chemicals to try to find a vendor to make it happen. I hope to know more on that front next week.

My distributor is blowing out .223's for $40 shipped in an attempt to generate buzz. There's only 10 available at that price though - they'll never be any cheaper. http://www.atomictactical.com/STD-Simpl ... std556.htm

I perfected the design before putting much effort into marketing. The video's I posted were literally my R&D footage I had no intention (at the time) of sharing with anyone. I just couldn't help showing people, mainly out of my own amazement. The .223 footage with the AR pistol is a first revision too. The design has been updated since that, and it no longer flares up at all. You get a little ring of fire every time - even with crappy Wolf. I'm also hoping to get a high speed camera for some footage to show what's happening. It'll be good eye candy if nothing else.

Just like that other acronym, STD's arrive in fish nets.

The STD combines the noise redirection benefits of other in-line flash suppressors with the small size of the A2. At under half the weight of other such devices, you no longer have to suffer with additional weight and length to gain the benefits of this style flash suppressor - regardless of how short your barrel is.

The STD was designed for hunters, by a hunter. Jim was tired of losing his night vision when shooting in low light, and equally tired of having his ears hurt when the shot was fired without ear plugs in. Many other designs were fielded before finally going back to the drawing board - literally; starting over from scratch with the K.I.S.S. principle. Keep It Simple Stupid. When he grabbed his note pad to sketch out a quick blueprint for a thread protector he didn't stop at that, kept drawing, and the STD's concept was born.

By changing the way the gasses are introduced to the atmosphere, the flash signature out of a STD is greatly diminished, more than any other comparable product available today short of a NFA registered device. A quick look at in-line "compensators" on Youtube shows how miserably ineffective they are, until now.

The added benefit of this design, is that it reduces the concussion felt by the shooter and those along side them. Anyone who's shot at an indoor range knows all too well that being along side a high powered rifle in the next bay can make shooting miserable even with plugs in. People who've been around the STD's in that same situation have remarked how pleasant it is - despite shooting some of the shortest barrels that function in the AR pistol platform and full power ammunition.

How well does it work though? We have to shoot in the dark to capture the flash signature on camera. Guns which light up a room without a muzzle device are reduced to the lumen output of a Bic lighter if you can even see the flash - with a 7.5 inch barrel.

Currently available in .223/5.56 with 1/2-28 threads and .30 caliber 5/8-24 designs specifically engineered for the AR platform and proven with extensive live fire testing. Other sizes will be developed in the future.

I would strike "noise reduction" and make it "noise/blast redirection". You don't want to make a claim that will bring BATFE attention to you, nor to make a false claim.

I am up for one in .30 and if you ever do one for 9mm AR, 1/2 x 36 (prefer black )
Shoot softly, and carry a big clip.

Good point. That will be changed.

I heavily test these when they're being developed (300+ rounds per revision - thank God I reload  ). I'm not sure if the ratios of clearance, recess, and blast chamber would be the same for other calibers (which is why I haven't made one for the 14x1LH AK guys yet). My R&D budget is wiped out right now (tied up in inventory), so new models will have to wait while the current proven ones sell. Unfortunately, I don't have a bunch of money backing me like the big corps do. It's my product, and my wallet that's making everything happen.

You might want to change the name of your product. No one I know would brag about having a STD.

That's the tongue in cheek humor of it. Besides, you won't forget the name.

I originally wanted to ship them in tied off condoms, but I'd probably be divorced if I had done it.

 It was a gorilla marketing idea. The expanded mesh just happens to look like fish net stalkings, so it's a coincidental association rather than direct intent.

Basic website is up. Still needs lots of work.

Ferritic Nitrocarburization. It's also more commonly called Melonite.

.30 cal versions will be going on the mill by next week too. I've got about two more days of 5.56's to run before I roll things over to the bigger slugs.
